Pre-season records mean absolutely nothing, but there is one interesting fact: Each of the past 10 Super Bowl winners finished at least with a .500 mark in the exhibition season.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Dallas finished tied with the NFL’s best regular-season record in 2016 but slipped to 9-7 last year largely because star running back Ezekiel Elliott was suspended six games. If the Cowboys slip further, Coach Jason Garrett could be in trouble. Dallas is +300 to win the NFC East at Sports Interaction, +1500 for the conference title and +2500 to win the franchise’s first Super Bowl since the 1995 season. “America’s Team” hasn’t been back to the big game since. It is given a win total of 8.5, with the under a slight favorite.

Houston plummeted to 4-12 last year but that was largely due to major injuries, specifically then-rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson and end J.J. Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. They are both healthy now but not expected to see the field Thursday. The Texans are +200 to win the AFC South, +1000 for the conference title and +2500 to win the first Super Bowl in franchise history. The Texans, Browns, Jaguars and Lions are the only current teams yet to ever play in the big game. Houston also has a win total of 8.5, but the over is a solid -166 favourite.

These teams were supposed to play last pre-season but the game was cancelled in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. The met in the 2016 pre-season, with the Texans winning 28-17 in Arlington.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have even lost motivation to play any key guys because they are on an even shorter turnaround than Houston, losing 27-3 at home vs. Arizona on Sunday night to fall to 0-3 (no Super Bowl!). Neither Dak Prescott nor Elliott played Sunday and they won’t Thursday – Elliott hasn’t played a pre-season snap despite being healthy and Prescott has only 39 total snaps. The Cowboys are really banged up on their terrific offensive line so Garrett isn’t going to risk it with his two stars. Pro Bowl centre Travis Frederick has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disease, and three’s no timetable for his return. Frederick didn’t miss a regular-season game in his first five years.

Houston Texans

Apparently, Houston has a shot at winning the Super Bowl if that pre-season record trend continues because the team is 2-1. It lost last week 21-20 at the Rams. Watt made his pre-season debut, his first game action since suffering a broken leg last season. Jadeveon Clowney also made his pre-season debut coming off surgery in the off-season. The Texans’ first-team defence didn’t allow a point. Watson played briefly and was 3-for-6 for 15 yards with an interception. It would be a stunner if any of those guys play here.
