Cowboys vs. Steelers Point Spread: NFL Week 5 Odds, Prediction

The host Steelers are priced as 2.5-point favourites on the NFL odds.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

This matchup should draw crazy-good TV ratings and betting action because many older football fans grew up watching this rivalry in the Super Bowl as the franchises have met a record three times in the big game. Pittsburgh won both in the 1970s and Dallas took the lone matchup in the 1990s. That 27-17 win in Super Bowl XXX on Jan. 28, 1996, marks the last time the Cowboys won a title. They haven’t even been back to the NFC title game since.

Could we see a fourth Super Bowl matchup in February in New Orleans? To win the AFC, the Steelers are +2000 while the Cowboys are +1200 in the NFC. I only give either a chance with home-field advantage throughout their conference playoffs.

Overall, Dallas leads the series 17-16 and lost the most recent matchup at home in 2020 by a score of 24-19, but that Cowboys team was ravaged by injury and terrible. Garrett Gilbert had to start that game at quarterback, for example.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys snapped a two-game skid with a 20-15 win at the New York Giants on Thursday night in Week 4, but it was very costly with top pass-rushers going down injured in perennial NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidate Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence. Parsons, maybe the most disruptive overall defender in the league, is out at least this week and Lawrence is headed to injured reserve. Parsons has had a bit of a slow start and has one sack and two tackles for loss, while Lawrence has three sacks and four TFL. After they went down against New York, the Cowboys counted on Chauncey Golston and rookie Marshawn Kneeland at defensive end. During the two-game skid, Dallas was destroyed by opposing ground games, but it held the Giants to just 26 yards on 24 carries. That’s likely more New York is a terrible offensive team than the Cowboys having fixed things. Dallas QB Dak Prescott completed 22 of 27 passes, marking the 12th time he has completed at least 80 per cent of his attempts in a game, which is the most by any player since 2016. The Cowboys are 11-2 ATS in their past 13 October games.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh got its best offensive game of the season from quarterback Justin Fields on Sunday but still suffered its first loss, 27-24 at Indianapolis. Fields threw for 312 yards and a score and rushed for two more touchdowns to become the first player in franchise history with at least 300 passing yards, 50 rushing yards and two rushing TDs in a game. He’s clearly going to keep that job for now even if Russell Wilson is cleared to return from injury this week. The Steelers’ top-ranked defence allowed a season high in points as Pittsburgh’s six-game regular-season winning streak ended. Guard James Daniels, linebacker Nick Herbig and running back/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson all left injured. It was the Steelers’ first loss when reaching at least 400 yards of offence since Week 16 in 2018. Pittsburgh is 8-4 ATS in its past 12 at home.
