Thursday Night Football Point Spread and Betting Analysis

We often get a lot of sloppy football in these Thursday night games because the teams are on such short rest, banged up and unprepared. That should not be the case between the Cowboys and Saints because they both played last Thursday on the American Thanksgiving holiday. Cowboys fans travel regardless but expect a lot of them at the Superdome because it’s only about 500 miles from Dallas and New Orleans is of course a major weekend destination.

This could have major playoff ramifications and perhaps be a first-round preview. Dallas probably will win the NFC East, while New Orleans will not win the South but is in the wild-card mix. The Cowboys lead the all-time series 17-13 and the clubs last played in 2019 with New Orleans winning ugly 12-10 at home.

The home team is 5-0 against the spread in the past five meetings.

Dallas Cowboys

Dallas lost at home to Las Vegas last Thursday, 36-33 in overtime, playing without its two star receivers in Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb. Both should play this week. Dak Prescott still managed to throw for 375 yards and two scores without them. Ezekiel Elliott clearly was less than 100 per cent with a minor knee injury as he rushed only nine times for 25 yards but did score. Frankly, the story of that game was Cowboys cornerback Anthony Brown getting called for defensive pass interference on just about every other play it seemed. The final penalty helped set up a Vegas chip-shot field goal to win the game. I’m frankly shocked he’s still on the team.

The Cowboys are dealing with a bit of a COVID outbreak that will sideline Coach Mike McCarthy for this one. A few more coaches tested positive, too. Defensive coordinator and former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn will run the show. So far, right tackle Terence Steele is the only player not active this week because of COVID. The Cowboys are 5-1 ATS in their past six vs. teams with a losing record.

New Orleans Saints

New Orleans has lost four straight games since losing starting QB Jameis Winston to a season-ending injury and it sounds as if Coach Sean Payton has seen enough of Trevor Siemian under centre. Taysom Hill took first-team reps at practice Monday and apparently will start. Hill has thrown just eight passes this season, completing seven for 56 yards and a pick. He missed a few games with an injury and probably would have started before now if not for being less than 100 per cent.

The Saints have also played without star running back Alvin Kamara the past three games. He did practice in a limited fashion on Monday. So did All-Pro right tackle Ryan Ramczyk after missing the past two with a knee injury. The Saints are 3-8 ATS in their past 11 vs. teams with a winning record.
