Commanders vs. Patriots Point Spread: NFL Pre-Season Week 1 Odds, Prediction

The 2025 NFL preseason is underway, as each team looks to make their mark in a new season.

These are familiar preseason foes, as the Commanders and Patriots have met 25 times overall. They were on opposite sides of the standings last season, with Washington finishing 12-5 while New England went 4-13. Although it is only preseason, setting the tone for the upcoming campaign is crucial.

As things currently stand on the NFL odds, the Patriots sit as 6.5-point favourites on their home field of Gillette Stadium. The total is 34.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Washington outpaced New England in almost every category last season, but we could be in for a different outcome in at least this game.

New England may seem like a major favourite here, but it is important to know that starters will be played few and far between, and there will be many substitutions throughout. A straight comparison of the starting roster may not do justice, so a larger outlook is required.

The total has been set to 34.5 points. New England has always been an elite defensive group but has been losing ground in this category for multiple years now. However, they have made some key additions that may offset some recent struggles.

Meanwhile, Washington has a run-and-gun style offence (fifth-most points in the NFL last season with 502). It will be enticing to see if they can continue to score at will.

Washington Commanders

This is a major year for the up-and-coming Commanders. They are in the NFC East Division with the defending Super Bowl champions but will be optimistic about their chances of grabbing the division title.

Their schedule will get more challenging after a successful season, so it is now time for them to prove whether or not last year was a fluke. After watching this team last season, it seems they have the core pieces to continue to build upon that success.

With some extra tinkering during the offseason, this matchup against the Patriots poses ample opportunity for players to prove their worth, and for the organization to set the winning tone early.

There has been a lot happening with veteran players during the offseason (Terry McLaurin’s unhappiness, acquiring Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil, etc.) but it is time to see what the young guns and depth pieces can do.

New England Patriots

In a different regard, the upcoming 2025 season is also crucial for the New England Patriots. The glory days of the Tom Brady era are long gone, but this is an organization that holds itself to a high standard, and they have been doing an excellent job in piecing together a strong roster. Their offseason has been seen as one of the best throughout the entire NFL.

The offence has gone through a major overhaul. They are led by young QB Drake Maye (third overall pick in 2024), where he had a very good showing in 13 games played. Newly acquired star wide receiver Stefon Diggs was a major move during the offseason, and could be a key piece in this offence.

With the fourth overall pick in the draft, they also picked up Will Campbell at offensive tackle. This was then followed by a second-round wide receiver (TreVeyon Henderson) and a third-round wide receiver (Kyle Williams).

NFL Prediction: Who Will Win Commanders vs. Patriots?

While it may be preseason action, we can officially say the NFL is back. The Commanders and Patriots should have a great mix of young and old players suiting up, giving the game an extra level of energy.

While wins haven’t been there, excitement is at a high in New England. The past couple of seasons have resulted in drafting in ways of both quality and quantity. There is a lot of competition within the organization, which should only bring the level of play up.

New Patriots coach Mike Vrabel will also look to make his mark on this team and set the tone early. The importance of this game could be much higher for the Patriots, and their energy and higher-level young talent could make the difference. New England should win this one by a score along the lines of 24-17.
