I think it’s fair to say that neither the 1-4 Washington Commanders nor the 2-3 Chicago Bears are going to finish with a winning record this season, and both should have a very high pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. This writer tends to doubt that Commanders coach Ron Rivera will be back next season. He’s a fan favorite in Chicago, for what it’s, worth as a former Bears linebacker – including on that epic 1985 team. He also was a former defensive coordinator there.

Washington is 5-6 all-time on Thursday nights. They last played one in Week 2 last season at home against the New York Giants and won 30-29. It’s the first road Thursday game for the Commanders since 2019 at Minnesota. Washington is 21-16 against the Bears all-time, including 9-8 in Chicago.

The road team is 8-2 against the spread in the past 10 meetings.

Washington Commanders

Washington lost its fourth straight game on Sunday, 21-17 at home to Tennessee. A lot of the fans want Carson Wentz pulled as the starting quarterback, but it wasn’t really his fault as he threw for 359 yards and two TDs. Wentz did have a pick and turnovers have been an issue. That interception came on third-and-goal at the Tennessee 2 with six seconds left. Washington has started six quarterbacks in Coach Ron Rivera’s two-plus seasons. Rookie running back Brian Robinson, who was shot twice in a Washington D.C.-area carjacking in late August, was able to make his NFL debut exactly six weeks later and had nine carries for 22 yards. Washington’s offensive line has been banged up as it has started three centres and was missing 60% of its original starters Sunday. Good-looking rookie receiver Jahan Dotson missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury and is not expected for this one. The Commanders are 0-6 ATS in their past six October games.

Chicago Bears

The Bears trailed 21-3 in Minnesota late in the second quarter on Sunday but managed to grab a 22-21 lead with about nine minutes left in the game before allowing the winning Vikings touchdown with about two minutes to go in a 29-22 defeat. On the bright side, Justin Fields had easily his best game of the season in completing 15 of 21 for 208 yards with a TD and also rushed for 47 yards. He had a 52-yard TD run called back by penalty. Chicago is still last by far in passing at 116.6 yards per game, but Fields has perhaps the worst group of receivers in the NFL. One receiver will make his Chicago debut on Thursday in former Patriot N’Keal Harry. He suffered a high ankle sprain during training camp that required surgery. The Bears got the former first-round pick in July for a 2024 seventh-round pick. Top cornerback Jaylon Johnson has missed the past three games due to injury but likely will play Thursday. The Bears are 2-5-1 ATS in their past eight at home.
