Really interesting quarterback matchup here. On one side, it’s Washington’s Jayden Daniels, a former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Heisman Trophy winner and No. 2 overall draft pick who is as much of a dual-threat passer as there is. On the other, it’s former Mr. Irrelevant draft choice Brock Purdy for San Francisco, and he might win his first NFL MVP Award this season. Purdy can run a little but is a pocket passer.
Unbeaten San Francisco already leads the NFC West by two games and all due respect to fellow 5-0 team Minnesota, the 49ers look like the conference’s best team so far. They are -205 favourites to win the NFC West, +300 leaders for the NFC title and +105 favourites for the No. 1 seed. Kyle Shanahan is right near the top at +650 for NFL Coach of the Year.
Washington had a terrific 2024 season when Daniels entered the league, but the team has regressed since then in part because Daniels has had trouble staying healthy – he’s currently playing with a big brace on his non-throwing elbow. The Commanders (1-3-1) are last in the NFC East and you are starting to hear not-good rumblings about head coach Dan Quinn’s future there.
San Francisco has won the past two in the series, but they haven’t played since 2023.
NFL Player Odds and Props
Back San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy for at least two touchdown passes as he has 13 on the year and at least two in every game. Also like Washington’s Jayden Daniels to not throw an interception as he hasn’t in 76 attempts yet this year.
Washington Commanders
If the Commanders’ season continues to spiral, perhaps circle Week 5 for when ownership started thinking about making some majors changes on the coaching staff. Just an inexcusable 27-27 home tie against the Giants on Sunday. Washington blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead but was in fairly easy field goal range near the end of overtime … before letting the clock run out with the kicking team not even on the field. Massive, massive blunder that’s probably on QB Jayden Daniels for snapping the ball on the play previous, but he was told to try and gain more yards. So that’s on embattled head coach Dan Quinn. Even Commanders minority owner Magic Johnson called out the team on social media. It marked Washington’s first time failing to win when leading by at least 14 points in the fourth quarter at home since 1999. The franchise is now incredibly winless in six straight OT games (four losses, two ties). Daniels rushed for 103 yards and two scores in nine carries, only the second Washington QB with at least 100 yards on the ground since 1950.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers were so impressive Sunday in a 32-29 win at defending Super Bowl champion Seattle to take control of the NFC West. The Niners had totaled only nine points in their previous two games against that stellar Seahawks defence. Brock Purdy threw two TDs and led two late scoring drives for the upset. Mike Evans blew up with seven catches for 113 yards and a TD. Purdy averaged 11.5 yards per attempt when targeting the future Hall of Famer Evans and 4.5 yards per attempt when targeting all others. Evans already has 21 first-down catches this year, among league leaders. San Francisco is 3-0 against last season’s conference championship teams (Denver, Seattle and LA Rams) while the rest of the league is 5-11. The Niners have joined the 1999 Rams as the only teams in league history with three wins in their first five games of a season against clubs that had a minimum of 12 wins the prior year.
