Arguably the most important Week 1 pre-season game in the NFL is Thursday night’s Indianapolis at Seattle matchup as it’s the long-awaited return of Colts star QB Andrew Luck. The Seahawks are 3-point favourites at Sports Interaction.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The best way to handicap a pre-season game is to go by a head coach’s exhibition record. Alas, we can’t do that Thursday for Indianapolis as it’s the head-coaching debut for Frank Reich. The Colts were set to hire Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to replace the fired Chuck Pagano, but McDaniels left the Colts at the altar the night before the press conference. So, Indy, with a bit of pie on its face as an organization, turned to Reich, who won a Super Bowl ring as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator last season. He was also a long-time NFL quarterback mostly in a backup role.

Seattle’s Pete Carroll is one of the longest-tenured coaches in the NFL, and he has an amazing pre-season against the spread career record of 34-14-1 dating to his days with the Jets and Patriots. Last year, Seattle won and covered all four exhibition games, winning three by at least a touchdown.

Indianapolis Colts

Luck had shoulder surgery in January 2017 and the Colts kept saying he would be fine for last season. He never fully recovered and only started throwing a regulation football about a month or so ago. Luck is expected to play around a quarter and admits he will be a tad nervous. The Colts might feel the need to play starters a little more than usual to get reacclimated to Luck in addition to a new head coach and new coordinators in Nick Sirianni (offense) and Matt Eberflus (defense). Luck’s blindside protector, left tackle Anthony Castonzo, will not play Thursday with a hamstring injury.

Seattle Seahawks

Few teams underwent more change in the offseason than the Seahawks, who don’t much resemble those Super Bowl-caliber clubs – especially on defense, where the Legion of Boom secondary has been disassembled. The one guy left, Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas, is not in camp as he demands a new contract or trade. Starting QB Russell Wilson should play briefly, but his No. 1 receiver Doug Baldwin could miss the entire preseason with a knee injury. This should be the debut of rookie linebacker Shaquem Griffin, the fifth-round pick who dominated at Central Florida even though he has just one hand.
