The Indianapolis Colts season got back on track Sunday, mostly. Indy earned a much-needed 31-20 win over the Houston Texans to even their win-loss record to 1-1. The bad news is that newly-minted starting quarterback Anthony Richardson left the game in the second quarter with concussion symptoms.

Colts QB Anthony Richardson Suffers Concussion Symptoms

The NFL takes concussion protocols extremely seriously these days, especially after last season’s controversial episode involving Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa. There are “spotters” at every game who observe player behaviours and, should they exhibit concussion symptoms, on-field doctors are immediately notified. A player’s physical behaviour is what’s observed rather than actual hits.

What differed in Richardson’s case is that he himself approached the Colts staff, admitting that he wasn’t feeling himself. It is believed the smoking gun for his condition came on a hit he received when rushing into the end zone for his second TD of the game in the first quarter. His dash to score seemed to have a clear path until a Texan defender got to him just as he crossed the goal line. Richardson took a tumble and his helmet collided with the turf. He initially seemed to be fine but ultimately left the game.

Richardson finished the day going 6-for-10, 56 yards through the air, 35 rushing yards and two TDs on the ground.

It should be noted that he didn’t complete Indianapolis’ Week 1 contest against the Jaguars either, although that injury was much later in the contest and had nothing to do with a concussion. Even so, the young quarterback’s health will be under much scrutiny given the tumultuous start to his NFL career.
