Chiefs vs. Jets Point Spread: NFL Week 4 Odds, Prediction

What once looked like one of the most important AFC games of the 2023 regular season instead now looks like a mismatch as the Kansas City Chiefs visit the New York Jets in the Sunday night Week 4 game. Patrick Mahomes & Co. opened as 9.5-point favourites on the NFL odds.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Every NFL fan circled this matchup when the schedule was announced in May as the first NFL meeting between Kansas City quarterback and two-time league MVP Patrick Mahomes and NY Jets quarterback and four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers. How have they avoided each other previously? The only game Mahomes played against Green Bay in his career was in 2021 in KC, but Rodgers was out with COVID. The Chiefs and Jets are not currently scheduled to play in 2024 but would if they both finish in the same position in the AFC West and AFC East, respectively. That’s very unlikely to happen.

Because of Rodgers, the Jets are scheduled for several primetime games this season and that could be ugly at times with Zach Wilson under centre. It is likely that New York is flexed out of at least one later primetime game, but it’s too early in the season for that to happen this week. This is the Jets’ first Sunday night game since 2011.

The Jets have won their past four meetings at home against the Chiefs, most recently 38-31 at MetLife in 2017, but Mahomes is 1-0 against the Jets with a 2020 victory in Kansas City.

Kansas City Chiefs

The biggest story surrounding the Chiefs right now involves future Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce not for what he’s doing on the field – back-to-back games with a TD after missing the opener injured – but because he’s apparently dating Taylor Swift, who was at Kansas City’s 41-10 home rout of Chicago on Sunday. The 41 points were more than the Chiefs had the first two weeks combined. Patrick Mahomes had three TD passes and became the fastest player in NFL history by games played to 25,000 career passing yards. It was the 271st career win for coach Andy Reid, including playoffs. He surpassed Hall of Famer Tom Landry (270) for the fourth-most wins by a head coach, including the postseason, in NFL history. Don Shula leads all-time with 347. The Kansas City defence has been shockingly good, having allowed just three offensive TDs so far.

New York Jets

The Jets are lost offensively without Aaron Rodgers. Everyone in New York, including legendary former Jets QB Joe Namath, wants QB Zach Wilson gone, but the team just doesn’t have a better option with journeyman Tim Boyle the only other signal-caller on the roster. Wilson at least wasn’t picked off in Sunday’s 15-10 loss to the Patriots but threw for only 157 yards and is by far the league’s lowest-rated passer after also being so the past two seasons. Wilson’s completion percentage (52.4) and QBR (27.0) are career lows. New York has to trade for Minnesota QB Kirk Cousins or this season is over. Matt Ryan has said he’s not interested in joining the Jets from the CBS TV booth and the team reportedly has rebuffed the interested of Carson Wentz.
