After becoming the first AFC team to clinch a playoff spot, the Chiefs are looking to lock up home field advantage, down the final stretch of the season.

Still yet to throw an interception, rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa will have his hands full when the Dolphins welcome the Kansas City Chiefs in Miami on Sunday.  The Chiefs are 7-point favourites on the NFL odds, with a total of 49.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The under is 5-0 in the Chiefs last five road games against teams with a winning record and 6-1 in their last seven December games.  Kansas City is 4-0 against the spread (ATS) in their last four games overall.

The under is 5-1 in Miami’s last six games against AFC opponents, while the Dolphins are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven games against AFC opponents.

Kansas City Chiefs

Despite looking like the team to beat in the AFC this year, the Chiefs struggled in critical situations in their 22-16 win over the Broncos.  Kansas City’s offence went 0-for-4 in the red zone and just 3-for-10 on third down.  It wasn’t a great showing from an offence averaging 8.2 yards per attempt, third in the league.  Patrick Mahomes only managed a single TD pass, but he did finish with 318 passing yards.

The Chiefs pass defence had another good showing against Denver, picking off Bronco’s QB Drew Lock twice and holding him to 151 passing yards.

Miami Dolphins

Dolphins fans must be encouraged after seeing rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa start throwing the ball deeper, lately.  Miami’s 19-7 win over the Bengals, last week, was Tagovailoa’s best game yet, as he finished with 296 passing yards and threw his seventh TD pass of the year.  Running back Myles Gaskin also had a solid outing against Cincinnati, averaging 4.3 yards per carry by rushing 21 times for 90 yards.

An area of concern for Miami, especially against the Chiefs, is the Dolphins pass defence.  Miami allows an average of 7.4 yards per pass attempt (25th in the NFL) and 11.9 yards per catch (31st).  The pass rush, however, seems to be trending up.  The Dolphin had six sacks last week, bringing their total up to 31 on the year.
