This will be a rematch of a Super Bowl from two seasons ago when the Chiefs were able to rally from a 10-point deficit and emerge as champions. The Chiefs are still a championship-ready team that has made the Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons, so there isn’t much they are going to be looking for in particular here. On the other hand, the 49ers are eager to find out just how good their first-round quarterback is.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Andy Reid is 39-45 in his career in the preseason. Reid’s teams are 10-12 in Week 1. His teams have a losing record in all weeks except for Week 3.
The 49ers are just 6-6 in the preseason under Kyle Shanahan. They’re 3-0 in Week but are just 1-2 in each of the other weeks.
Kansas City Chiefs
Unfortunately, we won’t get the privilege of watching Patrick Mahomes for long as he will likely just start for one possession before taking a backseat. It wouldn’t even be a surprise if he didn’t play at all with the rest of the key starters. They aren’t going to be their main concern here, though, as the offensive line had undergone some serious changes during the offseason. Veterans Joel Thuney and Orlando Brown will be heavily looked at alongside their two rookies Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith. The 49ers have a good defensive line – even they all aren’t playing – so it’ll give the Chiefs a good idea of whether or not this unit has improved.
Kansas City will want to see some level of improvement defensively as they struggled against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl. After all, they did allow nearly 4,000 passing yards and 29 touchdowns during the 2020 season.
San Francisco 49ers
There is going to be a lot of Trey Lance in this matchup and he’s going to be the main attraction. Reports say that he has absolutely shined in training camp and is likely going to be the starting quarterback throughout the majority of this game. Some fans are already calling for Lance to be the starter for Week 1, so we’re going to get a good look early on. We have yet to see him in an NFL game yet.
Another big key here is the rotation behind Lance. The 49ers have Josh Rosen on their roster as well as Nate Sudfeld. While those two have struggled in live games, at least they have action under their belt and could have an impact in the third and fourth quarter.
San Francisco will also be excited to see how their defense performs after injuries devastated that side of the ball in 2020. Nick Bosa and Dee Ford played just a combined three games last season and should both get some time on the field against one of the best offensive lines in the league. This will be a big game for San Francisco in terms of finding out where they stand.
