Chargers vs. Jets Point Spread: NFL Week 9 Odds, Prediction

It’s the Chargers whom the NFL odds favour at the time of publication. Los Angeles is sits with a -3 spread for this upcoming match.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

No chance a game featuring the major media markets of Los Angeles and New York was getting flexed out of Monday night no matter what the state of each team right now.

In many ways, the franchises are a lot alike in that it seems like they are snakebitten for one reason or another. For the Jets, it’s always at quarterback. They really haven’t found one since Joe Namath but thought the problem was solved by trading for Aaron Rodgers. He remains out rehabbing his Achilles injury but is working hard to try and make a miracle comeback in the playoffs if the Jets get there.

The Chargers have one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL in Justin Herbert and probably one of the most talented rosters overall, but there is a reason that “Chargers gonna Charger” is a saying in this league. No franchise seems to shoot itself more in the foot and this goes back many years. Last season’s Wild Card loss in Jacksonville, blowing a 27-0 lead, is a perfect example. Coach Brandon Staley is on one of the hottest seats in the league.

Los Angeles leads the all-time series 23-14-1 including playoffs and has won the past four. The most recent meeting was a 34-28 final in LA – the Jets were 0-9 entering the game and used Joe Flacco at QB. Herbert was a rookie but had one of the best games of his career with 366 yards, three TDs and no picks.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers opened the season with back-to-back losses followed by back-to-back wins and then back-to-back losses before Sunday night’s 30-13 home win over Chicago. Justin Herbert was nearly perfect in the first half in leading the Bolts to 24 points and finished 31-for-40 for 298 yards and three scores.

The Chargers have scored at least 14 points in six of seven first halves this season, one behind Miami for the league lead. Austin Ekeler had a TD catch against the Bears, his league-leading (by far) 40th TD from scrimmage since 2021. The Chargers offensive line didn’t allow a single sack. The LA defence forced two takeaways and denied Chicago on a trio of fourth-down stops, including a pair of fourth-and-1 tries. “I think every win is important. But this one, we saw all three phases get after it— special teams, offence, defence. I think that’s what we needed,” Herbert said. “That gives us the confidence going forward.”

New York Jets

The Jets’ playoff hopes are very much alive as the team has followed a 1-3 start with three straight wins. Gang Green looked dead in the water Sunday against the rival Giants, who were poised to take a 13-7 lead with under 30 seconds left, but Graham Gano missed a 35-yard field goal. With no timeouts, Zach Wilson got the Jets in place for Greg Zuerlein’s 35-yard field goal on the final play of regulation. Zuerlein added the winning 33-yarder with 6:09 left in overtime for the 13-10 win.

Wilson wasn’t very accurate at 17-for-36 but had 240 yards and a TD with no turnovers. The Jets were just 2 for 15 on third down and didn’t convert their first until there were just over two minutes remaining. They also had nine penalties for 85 yards, including four personal fouls. That stellar defence held the Giants to minus-9 net passing yards — a franchise record for the Jets and a franchise low for the Giants.
