The regulars on both sides of the ball won’t see much action in this game in Santa Clara. But do take note of the competition battling between two decent back-ups with the Chargers. It could prove to be the difference in this game.

Odds makers have the home side 49ers as slight -3.5 favourites.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

These two teams last met during the 2014 season (December 20) where the 49ers lost to the then San Diego Chargers 38-35 in San Francisco. The 49ers have not played well when listed as favourites. In their last nine games they are 1-8 ATS as favourites, and 0-7 ATS in their last seven games when favourites by three or less points. The Chargers are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games when played as underdogs.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers hosted the Saints last week and were blown out 36-7 to fall to 1-2 this preseason. Game four will be (like most teams) a reserve game, but there are some intriguing competitions. In the back-up quarterback role, Geno Smith appears to be the leading contender to back-up Philip Rivers, but Cardale Jones will get some time in this game against the 49ers according to Head Coach Anthony Lynn. Jones has been nursing a groin injury and looked “off” against the Saints. Expect standout linebacker Joey Bosa to miss this game as well, as he’s had an injury riddled pre-season, but should be ready for week one against the Chiefs.

One side note, and this is interesting, there is some talk that the Chargers may test their two field goal kickers in this game, as a battle continues between Caleb Sturgis and Roberto Aguayo.

San Francisco 49ers

Last week the 49ers fell to the Colts, and saw their record drop to 1-2 this pre-season. Starter Jimmy Garoppolo is not expected to see the field in this game, and there is some talk that back-up CJ Beathard will be limited. So, 23 year-old Nick Mullens is likely to get a lot of playing time in this game. This will be his fourth pre-season contest and he has played well, going 21 for 26 for 290 yards.

Of note, linebacker Rueben Foster suffered a concussion against the Colts, which means Foster will likely skip this game against the Chargers. Foster will also have to wait till week three of the regular season to see his first action with the team, as he will serve a two-game suspension for violating the league’s policies on personal conduct and substance abuse.
