Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Josh Rosen will get his first game action with the first-team offence on Friday when the Cards visit New Orleans in Week 2 of the pre-season. The Saints are opened as favourites on the NFL odds board.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Arizona Cardinals coach Steve Wilks is unbeaten straight-up and against the spread in his NFL head-coaching career. OK, that’s just one game so far. Last week in their pre-season opener, Arizona was a 3-point home favourite against the Los Angeles Chargers and won 24-17. Wilks is a former defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers who replaced the retired Bruce Arians. Wilks and Arians are polar opposites both stylistically (Arians was an offensive guy) and personally. Wilks also interviewed for the head coaching jobs with the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton is 24-22 ATS in his pre-season career following last week’s 24-20 victory at Jacksonville – the Saints were 2-point underdogs. The Saints beat the Cardinals in New Orleans in the last regular-season meeting between the teams, 48-41 in Week 16 of the 2016 season. Drew Brees threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns.

Arizona Cardinals

The main thing that Cardinals fans want to see this pre-season is the play of rookie quarterback Josh Rosen. Arizona traded up to No. 10 in the first round this year to draft Rosen, fearing that if it didn’t move up that Miami at No. 11 would grab Rosen (and the Fins probably would have). Rosen had good moments and bad in his NFL debut, completing 6-for-13 for 41 yards. He played behind the Cardinals’ second-team offensive line and those guys were not much help.  Backup centre Daniel Munyer had more than a few poor shotgun snaps to Rosen. Starting QB Sam Bradford threw just one pass before giving way to Rosen vs. the Chargers. Wilks said that Bradford will play more this week but that Rosen will get time first unit as well. Arizona already has dealt with one major injury in camp as starting centre A.Q. Shipley suffered a season-ending torn ACL.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints have no quarterback questions with the future Hall of Famer Brees set to become the NFL’s all-time leading passer this season, probably in late October. Brees really has no need to play in exhibition games at this point in his Hall of Fame career and didn’t last week. He got into one pre-season game in 2017. New Orleans won’t have running back Mark Ingram the first four games of the regular season due to suspension but he’s allowed to play in the pre-season. Ingram had a 2-yard TD run vs. Jacksonville. The Saints have largely been without first-round rookie defensive end Marcus Davenport because he suffered a groin injury last month. He won’t play here.
