NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

It’s the first meeting of the season between division rivals and they turn around and play again in Cleveland in Week 14. Last year, Baltimore won both meetings – it was a 38-6 home blowout in Week 1 as Lamar Jackson completed 20-for-25 for 275 yards and three scores and rushed for 45 yards. Baker Mayfield was not great, completing 21-for-39 for 189 yards, a TD and a pick. More on both guys below.

Baltimore and Cleveland both were wild-card teams last season and that could happen again, although the Ravens (7-3) currently lead the AFC North by a game over Cincinnati (6-4). Cleveland is 1.5 games back at 6-5. Pittsburgh is also in the mix at 5-4-1. The Ravens are -134 favourites to win the North and would be my pick if fully healthy. The Browns are +354. To make the playoffs, Baltimore is -476 and Cleveland +136.

This is the time of year when weather could be a factor somewhere like Baltimore, but while it will be a bit chilly it shouldn’t be an issue. The favourite is 7-3 against the spread in the past 10 meetings. The under is 7-3 in the previous 10 in Baltimore.

Cleveland Browns

This was a huge season for Browns quarterback and former No. 1 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield because he’s now eligible for a monster extension on top of his rookie contract, but Mayfield hasn’t gotten it and almost surely the Browns are simply going to let him play on his rookie fifth-year option in 2022 because Mayfield has taken a step back. To be fair, he’s playing through both a left shoulder and knee injury currently. Mayfield has really struggled the past two games, but Cleveland did manage to beat winless Detroit 13-10 on Sunday despite his two picks.

Nick Chubb returned from a one-game COVID absence and supplied most of the offence with 130 yards rushing and a TD catch. He and the Colts’ Jonathan Taylor will duel for the NFL rushing title. Chubb’s excellent backup, former rushing king Kareem Hunt, could return from injured reserve and play. Top wideout Jarvis Landry aggravated a knee injury vs. Detroit and now is in question for Baltimore. Cleveland is 2-9 ATS in its past 11 vs. the AFC North.

Baltimore Ravens

Ravens star quarterback and MVP candidate Lamar Jackson missed two practices last week with a non-COVID illness but returned on Friday. Thus, it was thought he would play Sunday in Chicago, but the team scratched him shortly before kickoff. The Ravens were able to rally for a 16-13 win behind backup Tyler Huntley in his first NFL start. Jackson should play this week but obviously monitor that.

Jackson is 4-1 as a starter against the Browns, throwing 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. No. 1 receiver Marquise Brown also sat with a thigh injury but also should return. He has 52 catches for 719 yards and six TDs. Baltimore is 8-2 ATS in its past 10 vs. the AFC North.
