NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
This writer believes these are the two best rosters in the AFC this season. Kansas City is the +445 favourite to win Super Bowl 56 and +234 leader to repeat as conference champion. Cleveland is +1398 to win its first-ever Super Bowl – Browns are one of four active franchises to never play in one – and +723 in the AFC.
Kansas City hosted Cleveland in the divisional round of last season’s playoffs and barely escaped 22-17. Star Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes entered with a foot injury and then took a hard hit and had to leave the game with a possible concussion. Backup Chad Henne did enough in relief – including converting an incredibly gutsy fourth-down play call by Andy Reid late – for the Chiefs to advance. However, that foot injury for Mahomes essentially doomed Kansas City in the Super Bowl 55 loss to Tampa Bay.
The last regular-season matchup was in November 2018 in Cleveland and the Chiefs rolled 37-21. Mahomes threw for 375 yards and three scores. The Browns’ Baker Mayfield threw for 297, two TDs and a pick.
The road team is 4-0 ATS in the past four including playoffs.
Cleveland Browns
Not kidding when saying that the Browns might have the best roster in football top to bottom. The team really focused on the defence in the free agency and the draft, signing former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney and drafting Northwestern cornerback Greg Newsome II at No. 26 overall and Notre Dame linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah at No. 52 – many thought he was a first-round talent and he’s +839 to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
This team, though, will go as far as QB Baker Mayfield takes it, and he has a potential $200 million contract extension waiting with a big season. Mayfield is +2918 to win NFL MVP. Wideout Odell Beckham Jr. is good to go after suffering a season-ending injury in the team’s seventh game in 2020. It’s a bit of a make-or-break season for the former Pro Bowler. Cleveland is 4-1 ATS in its past five as a road dog.
Kansas City Chiefs
There is no more talented quarterback in the league, maybe ever, than Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes. He’s +425 to win his second NFL MVP Award, and I don’t put it past him to be the first to ever throw for 6,000 yards now that there are 17 regular-season games and he stays healthy. He is +246 to lead the league in passing yards and +330 to lead in TD passes. The team overhauled the offensive line in the off-season – in the draft, free agency and via trade — after Mahomes was beaten to a pulp in the Super Bowl loss to the Bucs. It’s possible that Kansas City is favoured in every game this year. The Chiefs were pretty awful ATS last year, going 8-11 including playoffs.
