This time of year, we have to mention the weather forecast in Denver because of the possibility of wintry weather, but it doesn’t look too bad this far out with clear skies projected and a low of 29 degrees. The Browns are more than familiar with wintry conditions themselves annually in Cleveland and actually played in some snow in Week 12 when they upset Pittsburgh.
There had been chatter that the Browns would fire Kevin Stefanski after Week 12 if they team was beaten badly at home by the Steelers, but that didn’t happen and now Stefanski should finish out the season at a minimum. Maybe a strong finish saves his job as Stefanski is a two-time NFL Coach of the Year Award winner, including in 2023.
Denver has a top Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate in quarterback Bo Nix (+110), the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft but sixth QB off the board. The Broncos haven’t reached the playoffs since winning the Super Bowl in QB Peyton Manning’s final season in 2015 but currently hold the AFC’s final wild-card spot. They are -160 to reach the playoffs.
It’s the 33rd all-time meeting between the teams, who played a couple of epic playoff games against one another in the 1980s, with Denver leading 25-7. Last year, the Broncos trounced the visiting Browns 29-12.
Cleveland Browns
Cleveland has played much better since struggling and massively overpaid quarterback Deshaun Watson went down with a season-ending injury in Week 7. The Browns improved to 2-2 since Jameis Winston replaced him with a 24-19 home upset of AFC North-leading Pittsburgh in Thursday in Week 12. Winston threw for 219 yards and rushed for a score, while Nick Chubb rushed for two TDs – including the winner with under a minute left. The Browns converted just one of their 10 third-down attempts in their win over the Steelers but all four of their fourth-down attempts, two of which came on their game-winning drive. It was just Cleveland’s second game this year scoring more than 20 points. Star pass-rusher Myles Garrett had three sacks (and a forced fumble) and is now third in the league with 10 sacks. He is the only NFL player with multiple games with at least three sacks this season, and Garrett has a total of five career games with at least three sacks.
Denver Broncos
Denver won its second straight game on Sunday to boost its playoff hopes, 29-19 at a terrible Las Vegas team. Rookie Bo Nix seems to get better every week under centre for the Broncos and threw for 273 yards and two scores with no turnovers. Denver has now gone 15 straight quarters without a turnover. Nix’s 16 TD passes on the season are a franchise record, and he leads all rookies in passing touchdowns and total TDs (21). Over the past eight games, Nix has 18 total TDs and just two interceptions. Wideout Courtland Sutton didn’t have a first-half catch Sunday but finished with eight receptions for 97 yards and two scores, his first two-touchdown game since the 2019 season. But the team might be all smoke and mirrors as it is 6-0 against opponents with a non-winning record this year compared to 1-5 against clubs with a current winning mark. Denver’s season sweep over the Raiders was its first since 2014. The Broncos are 7-1 this year in games they force at least one turnover.
