NFL: New England Patriots at New York Jets

Week 4 offers another intriguing matchup as the New York Jets host a Denver Broncos squad that isn’t a pushover after all.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh and quarterback Aaron Rodgers may have a pointlessly opaque relationship, but winning makes everything go down smoothly. They most recently dismantled the New England Patriots last Thursday night 24-3. Their opponents this Sunday will be the Denver Broncos, who made a few people do double-takes in Week 3 by trouncing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-7.

Even though the Broncos played well, the host Jets are heavily favoured at -7.5, as per our NFL odds.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

One of the most unexpected stats is that the Jets are riding a two-game winning streak over the Broncos. For all the criticism and mocking of New York’s quarterback play in recent seasons, they went out and beat the Broncos in Denver in 2023 and 2022. Before that, it was Denver who had claimed two straight matches in 2020 and 2021.

Denver might make for an interesting pick all season if they can play half as well as they did in Week 3. Despite being 1-2 straight up, they’re 2-1 against the spread. The under has won the day twice in a row for a 2-1 record in its favour. Bad news though: LB Alex Singleton, one of the team’s studs on defence, has a torn ACL and is out for the season.

Whether the dark Monday night of Week 1 is a thing of the past for the Jets remains to be seen. At least the Jets have not only won twice in a row but covered the spread as well for a decent 2-1 record. Better still, they were favoured in both wins, suggesting the Jets can take care of business with some authority.

Denver Broncos

Incidentally, this author also wrote about what the Carolina Panthers did in Week 3, so this is the second team they’re covering that came out of nowhere to demolish a team on the road last Sunday.

Rookie QB Bo Nix, on whose shoulders the franchise’s future largely rests, played a very nice game in Tampa. He went a respectable 25-for-36, 216 yards and, most importantly, no interceptions. His run for a TD in the first quarter was also impressive to see develop. The yards don’t pop out, but the big story was the quality of his throws. They looked genuinely good. There seemed to be something resembling chemistry between him and WR Courtland Sutton (11 targets, seven catches). Little-known RB Tyler Badie acted like a baddie and hit 70 yards on only eight touches.

Nix will get the flowers because he’s a QB, but the Broncos defence was stellar. They sent Baker Mayfield to the turf seven times, with LB Dondrea Tillman’s pair leading the team – he also had two tackles for losses and a trio of QB hits.

New York Jets

A win is a win, even if some must be put into a special context. Such was the case with the Jets’ easy conquering of the Patriots last week, 24-3.

The victory on Thursday night might have been too easy given that the next morning more people seemed interested in the awkward hug attempt between Rodgers and Saleh after the team scored a first-quarter TD. When you win by 21 points but people want to know if the head coach and quarterback like each other, something is amiss. On a positive note, Rodgers and WR Garrett Wilson made great connections, including a sensational red zone score. The offensive line looked awesome too. Caveat: 11-year veteran Morgan Moses is out with an injury.

The Jets are also where everyone expected them to be defensively (comfortably a top-10 unit) although LB C.J. Mosley is listed as questionable for Week 4.
