NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
The Broncos have been prime-time darlings this season because they acquired future Hall of Fame quarterback Russell Wilson via trade in the offseason, but they have been downright hard to watch offensively so far. Not the Chargers, though, who have a tremendous offence behind MVP candidate Justin Herbert.
Last year, the teams split. In Los Angeles, the Chargers won 34-13 in Week 17 as Herbert threw for 237 yards and two scores – one each to Mike Williams and Keenan Allen. Denver’s QB then was Drew Lock who isn’t very good and is now in Seattle as part of the Wilson trade but wasn’t terrible that day in completing 18 of 24 for 245 yards and a score.
The home team is 5-0 against the spread in the past five meetings. The clubs will play again Week 18 in Denver.
Denver Broncos
Many Broncos fans want first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett fired already because his offensive play-calling has been so questionable. The team has scored just six touchdowns, a combined five points in the third quarter, 36 points in three home games and ranked last in red zone offence. The Broncos come off a 12-9 home overtime loss to the Colts on Thursday in Week 5. Russell Wilson was intercepted twice, including a simply unacceptable one with about two minutes left in the Indianapolis end zone when simply a field goal would have given the Broncos a 12-9 lead. Wilson is dealing with a partial tear in his shoulder that is requiring injections, but he’s going to play through it. Cornerback Ronald Darby suffered a season-ending torn ACL vs. the Colts. Left tackle Garett Bolles also was lost for the year to a leg injury. Denver is 1-7 ATS in its past eight vs. the AFC.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers won their second in a row Sunday, 30-28 in Cleveland. Taylor Bertolet’s 27-yard field goal with 9:29 left was the winner. Browns rookie kicker Cade York missed a 54-yard field goal with 11 seconds left. Austin Ekeler rushed for a career-high 173 yards and scored twice for Los Angeles, which came in last in the league in rushing. The Bolts finished with 238 yards rushing, 174 more than their average. Justin Herbert threw for 228 yards and a TD. Pro Bowl receiver Keenan Allen has missed four straight games with a hamstring injury, and it’s not clear if he will return here. Offensive tackle Trey Pipkins hurt his knee against the Browns but isn’t expected to miss time. The Chargers are 8-3 ATS in their past 11 vs. the AFC West.
