As bad as things have looked at times this season, the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos are still very much alive in the AFC playoff race. 5-5 is good enough to get into the playoffs, so the Raiders (4-6) and the Broncos (3-7) are not out of it. That’ll change on Sunday as the loser of this contest will have too far of an uphill climb to make it.

Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Oakland is 4-6 straight up and 3-6-1 against the spread so far this season. Meanwhile, the Broncos have been even worse from a betting perspective with a 2-7-1 record against the spread and a 3-7 record straight up.

The Raiders have covered just once in their last six as a favorite of 3.5 to 9.5 points while the Broncos have failed to cover as a dog of that size all three times this season.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos have looked like a completely different team than the one that beat Oakland 16-10 back in Week 4. After winning three of its first four, Denver has dropped six in a row. The Broncos hit a new low last week when Andy Dalton threw three touchdown passes as the Cincinnati Bengals picked up a 20-17 win, the Bengals first victory in Denver since 1975. General manager John Elway has called his team “soft” but the reality is that poor quarterback play has really taken a toll on this team as the year has progressed.

The Broncos addressed one of those issues when they fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. The hope is that quarterback coach Bill Musgrave could fare better in the role but he’s limited by the talent. Denver is likely to stick with Brock Osweiler at quarterback in the short term. Osweiler has struggled this season completing 53 percent of his passes with three touchdowns compared to four interceptions. Denver is 18th in passing offense, 15th in rushing and they’re averaging a paltry 20.1 points per game (24th). That’s putting a lot of pressure on a defense that has allowed 30.3 points per game during their six-game losing streak.

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders have to feel much better about their quarterback situation than Denver does heading in to Week 12. That said, the Raiders will need more out of their rushing attack. They are ranked 27th in the NFL in that category with just 89.7 yards per game. Last year, they were sixth in that category. The Raiders offense is at its best when it can establish an efficient run game and then attack opposing defenses over the top with the pass attack. If the Broncos defense remains soft, they might be able to find rushing lanes and take some pressure off David Carr.

The challenge for Oakland is that their defense has been miserable over the last month, allowing at least 24 points in each game. Can they perform better this week against the miserable Broncos? If so, they might eke out a win.
