The Bills are 2.5-point favourites on the NFL odds with a total of 53 points.

NFL Week 1 Point Spread and Betting Analysis

When the schedule was released months ago, the Rams were slight favourites for this game, which makes sense considering they are defending Super Bowl champions playing on their home field – the same SoFi Stadium on which Los Angeles beat Cincinnati in Super Bowl 56 in February. However, the Bills have been taking heavy futures money all offseason and some questions about the health of Rams QB Matthew Stafford’s elbow shifted the number. Stafford is apparently fine.

It’s the first time in the Kickoff Game for both franchises. Defending Super Bowl champions are 19-3 straight up in Week 1 since 2000 and have won the past four.

These teams haven’t met since Week 3 of the 2020 season in Buffalo when the Bills won 35-32 despite blowing a 28-3 third-quarter lead. Josh Allen threw the winning 3-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left and finished with 311 yards and four TDs through the air and one on the ground. Jared Goff was the LA quarterback then. Darrell Henderson (still on the team) rushed for 114 yards and a TD on 20 carries. Cooper Kupp had nine catches for 107 yards and a TD.

The favourite is 4-1 in the past five meetings.

Buffalo Bills

Oddsmakers love the Bills as they are +382 favourites to win their first Super Bowl, and I personally believe they would have won it last season if not for blowing a 36-33 lead in Kansas City in the divisional round of the playoffs with just 13 seconds remaining and losing in OT. Josh Allen is the +445 favourite to win MVP. Buffalo, the +345 favourite to finish with the NFL’s best record, opens with one major injury as Pro Bowl cornerback Tre’Davious White is on the PUP list after tearing his ACL in the second half of last season. No. 3 wideout Isaiah McKenzie is in some question with an undisclosed injury. Buffalo did add pass-rusher Von Miller in the offseason after Miller helped the Rams win the Super Bowl. One thing to note: In the 2021 regular season, Buffalo was 0-5 in one-possession games as all 11 wins came by multiple possessions. The only other team without a one-possession win was awful Houston. The Bills are 9-4-2 ATS in their last 15 games as road underdogs.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams have won and covered five straight Week 1 games under Sean McVay. The two main losses off the champions were pass-rusher Von Miller and receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who tore his ACL in the Super Bowl but could re-sign later in the year when healthy. Offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth retired. Ahead of the 2021 season, Matthew Stafford was traded from Detroit to Los Angeles, and Stafford thrived in McVay’s deep-passing attack by throwing for 4,886 yards and 41 TDs, both third in the NFL. Stafford had 14 TDs and zero picks in the fourth quarter of games last year, including playoffs. LA’s top two running backs, Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson, had been dealing with injuries this summer but both are going to play. The Rams are 1-4 ATS in their past five as favourites.
