NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh entered this season on arguably the hottest seat in the NFL, and he was fired on Tuesday following New York’s second straight loss on Sunday, 23-17 to unbeaten Minnesota in London to fall to 2-3. The Jets have the same record and total points scored (93) as they did in 2023 when Aaron Rodgers was out injured. That’s unacceptable with Rodgers now healthy.

Saleh’s .357 winning per centage (20-36 record) ranks as the worst in Jets franchise history among coaches with a minimum of 40 games at the helm. It’s the first time in owner Woody Johnson’s 25-year tenure that he has fired a coach in the middle of the season. Highly respected defensive coordinator Jeff Ullbrich will serve as the interim head coach the rest of the season and will be given every opportunity to earn the full-time job as he’s well-liked in the locker room.

If it doesn’t work out for Ullbrich, the three names you hear most to take over starting next season are current Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, former Titans coach Mike Vrabel and former Patriots coach Bill Belichick. You may remember in early January 2000 when Belichick was poised to be named Jets head coach but spurned them at the last minute and ended up taking over in New England. Wise choice in hindsight.

Buffalo is 69-58 all-time vs. the Jets including one playoff matchup. The teams split last season, each winning a low-scoring game at home. Rodgers suffered his season-ending injury just four snaps into the Week 1 matchup vs. Buffalo, but New York rallied to win regardless in OT. The total has landed under in five straight meetings.

Buffalo Bills

Bills quarterback Josh Allen was off to the best start of his career through three games, Buffalo was unbeaten and he was the MVP favourite. However, that offence has really struggled in a two-game skid – albeit both on the road and against Super Bowl contenders in the Ravens and Texans. Allen was just 9-for-30 in Sunday’s last-second 23-20 loss in Houston for 131 yards and a TD. That completion per centage of 30 was the lowest by any NFL QB in a game with at least 30 attempts since 1992. Allen was 0-for-13 on throws of at least 15 air yards. The Bills were without leading receiver Khalil Shakir due to an ankle injury and finished just 3-for-14 on third down. Buffalo also dropped to 13-15 in one-score games the past four seasons compared to 25-2 in all other games. Running back James Cook had his fourth rushing TD of the season in the loss, already matching his total from his first two seasons combined. Starting linebacker Terrel Bernard returned from a two-game injury absence in the loss but cornerback Taron Johnson, safety Taylor Rapp and defensive tackle Ed Oliver were all out. Consider them questionable for Monday. The Bills are 2-4 ATS in their past six games.

New York Jets

Aaron Rodgers simply has looked his 40 years of age thus far as the four-time league MVP has the fewest passing (1,093) and yards per attempt (6.0) and worst passer rating (81.6) through five games of a season in his Hall of Fame career. Because the Jets couldn’t run the ball at all for a second straight game, Rodgers attempted 54 passes on Sunday’s 23-17 loss to Minnesota in London and completed only 29 for 244 yards, two TDs and three picks – one interception returned for a 63-yard touchdown. Rodgers fell to 0-6 career in games he threw at least three picks. He also became the ninth QB ever with 60,000 career passing yards. Rather interestingly, Robert Saleh on Tuesday became the third NFL head coach to be fired after losing a game in London all-time. What has stunned the media covering the Jets is that offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett wasn’t also fired. The only realistic reason why not is that he’s tight with Rodgers. I do believe New York gets a “new head coach bump” for one game. The Jets are 8-2-1 ATS in their past 11 October games.
