The Cleveland Browns are six-point favourites on the NFL odds. The total opened at 45.

Thursday Night Football Point Spread and Betting Analysis

It’s the second week in a row football fans are treated to a matchup involving former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks. The Browns’ Mayfield (2017 winner at Oklahoma) lost to Lamar Jackson (2016 winner at Louisville) 38-6 in Week 1.

Cleveland has won only three of the past 10 against Cincinnati and is 2-8 against the spread in those 10. The Browns did take the first meeting at home last year, 27-19, in Week 14. Mayfield was frankly awful, completing just 11 of 24 for two picks and no TDs. However, the Browns did rush for 146 yards and two scores, one from Mayfield. Joe Mixon had 146 yards rushing and a TD for the Bengals.

In a meaningless Week 17 game for both, Cincinnati was a 33-23 winner in what would be the final game in a Bengals uniform for long-time starting QB Andy Dalton and the last as Browns coach for Freddie Kitchens. Dalton threw for a score and ran for one. Mixon had another big game with 162 yards rushing and two scores. Mayfield threw three TDs but was picked off three times.

The favourite is 8-2 ATS in the past 10 meetings. The over is 4-0-1 in the previous five.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals figure to be much better this season than last year’s two-win club with Burrow (2019 Heisman winner at LSU) and a return to health of top receiver AJ Green. However, they were 16-13 home losers to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1. Kicker Randy Bullock missed the tying 31-yard field goal with two seconds left as Bullock’s calf apparently cramped up as he was attempting the kick. Welcome to 2020!

Burrow threw for 193 yards with a pick and rushed for 46 yards and a score. Green, who missed all of last year, had five catches for 51 yards. That loss extends one streak: No QB taken No. 1 overall in the draft has won as a starter Week 1 of that year since 2002. Cincinnati played without arguably its best defensive player in tackle Geno Atkins. He was out with a shoulder injury, the Pro Bowler’s first game missed since 2013. The Bengals are 7-3-1 ATS in their past 11 Week 2 games.

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland was simply overmatched against the excellent Ravens in Sunday’s 38-6 road loss. Mayfield looked more like his 2019 version (bad) than his 2018 one (largely good) in completing 21 of 39 passes for 189 yards with a TD and pick. To be fair, Mayfield became the first QB in NFL history to start the first 30 games of his career on the same team with a fourth different head coach.

Odell Beckham Jr. was a non-factor with three catches for 22 yards. He dropped a pass that would have led to a first down with the team down 17-6 and driving. That’s 16 straight Week 1 losses for the Browns, which is by far an NFL record. Don’t be shocked if the Browns have kicking tryouts this week after Austin Seibert missed a field-goal attempt (after Beckham’s drop) and a PAT. Cleveland is 7-2 ATS in its past nine Thursday games.
