In the 2021 NFL Draft, it was thought that the New England Patriots were eyeing Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields with the No. 15 overall pick. The Chicago Bears wanted to get ahead of the Patriots and traded up to No. 11 to get Fields – although he hasn’t lived up to the hype yet. New England took Alabama’s Mac Jones, and he had a good rookie year but may not play in this one.

These teams haven’t met since Week 7 of the 2018 season in Chicago when the Patriots won 38-31 behind 277 yards passing and three scores from a guy named Tom Brady. Mitchell Trubisky was the Bears’ starter then and threw for two scores and rushed for one but was picked off twice.

New England is 4-0 against the spread in the past four meetings.

Chicago Bears

It’s the second straight prime-time game for the Bears and they don’t have an offence deserving of a national TV audience in averaging just 15.5 points per game (only Denver is worse) and 122.8 passing yards, easily the worst in the league. Last Thursday, the Bears lost 12-7 at home to Washington as Fields threw for 190 and a score and led the team with 88 yards rushing. The coaching staff really doesn’t let Fields take many chances downfield. Chicago still may have won if not for a muffed punt by rookie Velus Jones deep in Chicago territory midway through the fourth quarter. The Bears had had zero scores on the three trips inside the red zone in the loss. It was the second time this season that’s happened after the Bears went 0-for-3 inside the 20-yard line in a Week 4 loss at the Giants. Chicago is 2-5 ATS in its past seven road games.

New England Patriots

Former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady only got his first starting chance when he was young after Drew Bledsoe was injured. Brady obviously never gave the job back. Fourth-round rookie Bailey Zappe only got his chance when Mac Jones was injured in Week 4. Zappe may not give the job back as he has completed 72.9 percent of his passes for a rating of 111.4 that would lead the NFL is Zappe qualified. Bill Belichick has not committed to starting Jones again when healthy – and he’s probably not going to be ready for this game yet. Top running back Damien Harris missed the Patriots’ 38-15 win in Cleveland on Sunday with a hamstring injury. The victory was the 324th of Belichick’s head coaching career, tying him with former Bears head coach George Halas for second place all-time behind Don Shula. New England is 5-2 ATS in its past seven at home.
