Like many other teams, each squad has renewed optimism and excitement to see their new additions take the field for the first time. The Chicago Bears are hoping that Mitchell Trubisky is ready to take the next step while the Detroit Lions are hoping that having a healthy Matthew Stafford makes all of the difference. Many rookies and free agent acquisitions will be suiting up with their new team for the first time in Week 1 and it could be a telling sign on how the season can go.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The under is 7-1 in the Bears last eight games when coming in as the underdog. It has also been 15-6 in their last 21 games overall. However, the Bears are 1-6 ATS in their past seven games overall and 0-6 ATS in their last six road games.

The is over is 12-1 in the Lions last 13 games in Week 1. It is also 6-1 in their last seven home games as well. Detroit has been bad ATS as of late, they are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall and just 2-7 in their last nine matchups against NFC opponents.

Chicago Bears

The Bears are coming into this season with many question marks after a disappointing 8-8 season. They were 29th in the league in total points scored and are going to have to improve that number if they want to make the postseason this year. It was recently announced that Mitchell Trubisky will be the starting quarterback in this matchup against Detroit, which is a surprise because the team acquired Nick Foles in the offseason. The bar is so low for Trubisky as avoiding mistakes, moving the chains and keeping the team in the game is all he really needs to do – especially with that defense. Remember that running back David Montgomery is out, though, so that will hurt here.

Speaking of their defense, the Bears ranked fourth in total points scored against them and have a number of big names on that side of the ball, including superstar Khalil Mack. They’ll need to get to Stafford to derail what could be a quality Lions offense.

Detroit Lions

The Lions have a lot of work to do if they plan on improving from their horrific season last year. They finished 3-12-1, losing their last nine games of the season. They finished 18th in total points scored and 26th in total points allowed, they didn’t have a side of the ball that really set them apart from the rest of the league. Much of that had to do with the loss of Stafford, though, who missed most of last season.

The Lions are coming into this season with new talent on both sides of the ball. On the offensive end, they drafted running back D’Andre Swift to form a committee in their backfield with standout Kerryon Johnson. The duo should take some pressure off of Stafford – something he’s rarely had. On the other side, they were able to acquire safety Duron Harmon from the Patriots and signed cornerback Desmond Trufant to a two-year deal. They also drafted top cornerback Jeffrey Okudah in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft.

If the Lions offense can run the ball to support what was a pretty good passing game and the defense is slightly improved over last season, this could be a surprise team.
