First off, as of Thursday morning a ton of uncertainty remains around the status of superstar 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. After being a surprise — well at least publicly — scratch on Monday Night Football, the 49ers now revealed McCaffrey is dealing with Achilles tendinitis. The likes of Adam Schefter are reporting there’s a strong possibility McCaffrey won’t dress ahead of San Fran’s short week up to Minnesota.

This scenario would lead to the next revealing item: whether backup Jordan Mason’s 147-yard Week 1 outing was a one-off? Or was it a product of the well-oiled machine that is the San Francisco 49ers who cruised to a 32-19 win. Then what about the Minnesota Vikings? Expectations were getting lower and lower in Minnesota, but a 28-6 victory at New York to kick off the Vikings season may change those narratives. But the true test awaits in the 49ers.

Kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium Sunday goes at 1 p.m. EDT with the 49ers -5.5 favourites on the road and the total at 45.5 on the NFL odds.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The 49ers got some serious demons to exercise at Minnesota. A season ago, San Francisco entered Minnesota as a big road favourite only to fall 22-17. The defeat was the 49ers seventh-straight at Minnesota. Five of the last six 49ers–Vikings clashes have finished under the total.

Both clubs covered with ease last week and now get back into some heavy trends ATS. For starters, the 49ers are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games. Minnesota is 2-9 ATS in their last 11 at home. Even with the upset win over San Francisco last season, home field advantage was surprisingly anything but for Minnesota who went 2-6 outright on home field last year. The 49ers meanwhile went 7-2 on the road last season and typically show out wherever they travel.

San Francisco 49ers

After all the off-season hype about McCaffrey, plus receivers Deebo Samuel Sr. and Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers’ Week 1 gameplan ran through Jordan Mason. That’s as big of a testament to Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme as anything will be. But now that the film’s out on Mason in this 49ers offence, will a similar outcome arise for the 49ers at Minnesota? It’s what makes the chess match between Shanahan and Vikings d-coordinator Brian Flores must-watch TV.

A major piece on defence may be making his return in Week 2, as safety Talanoa Hufanga is inching closer to a full recovery from his torn ACL last season. Otherwise the 49ers remain loaded with stars on defence with the likes of Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, and Charvarius Ward.

Minnesota Vikings

Buried in all the 49ers news ahead of this tilt is the storyline of Sam Darnold facing his old team. By no means did Darnold leave San Francisco on sour terms, but internally every athlete has a little extra pep in their step when facing their old squad.

Regardless, Darnold should have that pep heading into Week 2 thanks to a pretty markable opening day outing. Darnold started off 12-for-12 in his Vikings debut and finished 19-of-24 for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Justin Jefferson was on the receiving end of one of those majors too which is encouraging to see a connection with his new QB in Darnold. Veteran running back Aaron Jones hasn’t lost a step either, in case anyone was wondering. The 29-year-old rushed 14 times for 94 yards and a touchdown in his Minnesota debut.
