NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
With the Los Angeles Rams having utterly imploded this season and the Arizona Cardinals as major disappointments, the NFC West winner is going to be either the 49ers or Seahawks — I would have said San Francisco for sure until starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ending injury in Week 13. Not sure how much rookie Brock Purdy can be trusted under centre (so far, so good).
Seattle was supposed to have a huge question mark at quarterback in Geno Smith, but he’s having a career year, is going to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year and likely made himself several million dollars with free agency on tap – whether the Seahawks give him the next contract is no sure thing.
San Francisco’s starting QB to open the season was young Trey Lance, but he suffered a season-ending injury in a 27-7 win over Seattle in Week 2. Garoppolo threw a TD pass and rushed for one in relief. Smith went 24 for 30 for 198 yards and an interception. Seattle also had a trick play near the goal line backfire for another turnover.
The home team is 4-1 against the spread in the past five meetings.
San Francisco 49ers
Many around the NFL believe that Kyle Shanahan is the best offensive mind in football, and he may have proven that true Sunday when the Niners obliterated Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-7 with third-string quarterback and Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy making his first NFL start. Brady had never lost to a QB making his first start, but Purdy was much better than TB12, completing 16 of 21 for 185 yards and two scores. Purdy joined Don Strock (1975) as the only players to throw at least two TD passes and run for another in the first half of their first career start. Purdy did suffer an oblique injury but is expected to play Thursday. However, star receiver Deebo Samuel, who rushed for a score, is going to miss time with a high ankle sprain. Christian McCaffrey had a rushing and receiving TD. San Francisco is 6-0 ATS in its past six vs. the NFC West.
Seattle Seahawks
Seattle was a nice early surprise but cracks are showing following a third loss in four games Sunday, 30-24 at home to Carolina. You can’t be fighting for a playoff spot and lose at home to the Panthers – who rushed for 223 yards. Geno Smith, still the clear favourite for NFL Comeback Player of the Year, threw for 264 yards and three scores but was picked twice, and Seattle couldn’t run the ball without Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate Kenneth Walker III. He might return Thursday. Wideout DK Metcalf has 72 receptions for 869 yards and six touchdowns this season and can become the fifth player since 1970 to record at least 900 receiving yards and five TD receptions in each of his first four seasons. Tyler Lockett has a TD catch in six straight games and can become the first player since Davante Adams in 2020 with a touchdown catch in seven consecutive games. Seattle is 4-1 ATS in its past five vs. teams with a winning record.
