It might be lacking one of its key protagonists, but Friday’s Camping World Bowl between the Syracuse Orange and the West Virginia Mountaineers has certainly been one of the more interesting contests from an odds standpoint.

The absence of West Virginia quarterback Will Grier, who is skipping the game to prepare for the NFL draft, has shifted the line dramatically in Syracuse’s favour. It has also resulted in a massive seven-point drop in the total.

Camping World Bowl Betting Analysis

West Virginia opened as a 6.5-point favourite in this one, but with their Heisman finalist sitting this one out, the Orange have become the fave. And given that Syracuse comes in having gone 9-1-1 ATS in its previous 11 games following a straight-up victory, it’s possible that oddsmakers haven’t adjusted enough for Grier’s absence. It’s also worth noting that West Virginia is 0-6 in its last six December games, and hasn’t covered in any of its past five bowl contests.

The total plummeted from 74 down to 67 with word that Grier was not playing – and with neither team trending strongly in one direction, getting a handle on this total could prove difficult. The Orange are 5-2 O/U in their last seven but have converted the under in five of their past six neutral-site outings. The Mountaineers have surpassed the number in five consecutive games, but are 3-0-1 to the under in their previous four neutral site outings.

West Virginia Mountaineers

Paging Jack Allison. The seldom-used backup will be tasked with outgunning a high-powered Syracuse offence despite having thrown just 10 collegiate passes for 75 yards with one TD and one INT. Grier’s absence will also put more pressure on a robust running game that averaged 4.6 yards per carry on the season with 21 touchdowns. On the other side of the football, West Virginia will need to tighten up a pass attack that surrendered 254.6 yards per game.

Syracuse Orange

Make no mistake – the Orange are playing in a late-December bowl game because they scored a ton of points during the season. Syracuse is one of only 12 Division I teams averaging better than 40 points per game (40.8), ranking 30th in rushing offence (207.3 yards per game) and 36th in average passing yardage (261.5). Quarterback Eric Dungey is at the centre of it all, throwing for 2,565 yards and 17 TDs while adding 749 yards and 15 scores on the ground.
