Kansas State was able to whoop Montana State in their own first-round matchup. Kansas State took them down by double digits. Although they are  the higher seed, it’s actually Kentucky that’s favourite as per the NCAA odds at -2.

Kentucky Wildcats (6)

There was a time that Kentucky was viewed as a possible bubble team. Since mid-February, though, they’ve stepped on the gas and appear to have plenty of momentum right now. So much so that they’re now favoured over a higher seed in the Round of 32.

Kentucky is led by Oscar Tshiebwe, who averaged 16.2 points and 13.5 rebounds per game this season. He absolutely dominated their first-round matchup, ending up with just eight points but he had a ridiculous 25 rebounds, two blocks, and three steals. It’s not every day that you see a forward dominate the game to this degree and he’s going to have to come up big for them once more here.

The question for this team is their depth. All five starters played at least 33 minutes in the first round. Point guard Sahvir Wheeler missed his 10th straight game and shooting guard C.J. Fredrick only played seven minutes. Can they skate by if they have to ride their starters so hard again?

Kansas State Wildcats (3)

The Kansas State Wildcats were able to come away with their first win in the March Madness tournament since 2018, making it a big moment for the school. The Wildcats have been able to get to this point thanks to their first-year head coach Jerome Tang, an assistant coach that helped beat Kentucky at big stages early in his career while working at Baylor. Tang understands what it takes to bring down a hot Kentucky squad in a big game.

When the tournament started, many were concerned with what they were seeing out of Kansas State. Their previous two games were losses to both TCU and West Virginia. Back-to-back losses were killing their momentum and putting their March Madness prospects into question. It wasn’t always pretty, though they were still able to pull away at the end against Montana State.

What’s interesting is that Kansas State was 8-2 against the spread against ranked teams this season. They have been competitive in big games. Meanwhile, Kentucky has labored against winning teams 12-14 against the spread as a favorite this season. Maybe Kansas State is a live dog here.
