LSU vs. Michigan NCAA Tournament Point Spread and Betting

Was the Big Ten vastly overrated this season? Most considered it the best league in the country, and it got nine schools in the NCAA Tournament, most of any conference. However, No. 2 seed Ohio State was shocked in the first round by No. 15 Oral Roberts and No. 1 seed Illinois, the second-most popular pick to win the Big Dance after unbeaten Gonzaga, was beaten by No. 8 Loyola (Chicago) in the second round Sunday.

It’s the fourth all-time meeting between LSU and Michigan. The Wolverines lead 2-1, but the Tigers won the last matchup 77-75 in November 2017 in Hawaii. The winner would face either No. 5 Colorado or No. 4 Florida State in the Sweet 16.

LSU is 4-0 against the spread in its past four neutral-site games. Michigan is 11-4-2 ATS in its past 17 NCAA Tournament games as a favourite.

Louisiana State Tigers

LSU (19-9), the SEC Tournament runner-up, beat Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament champion St. Bonaventure 76-61 in the first round on Saturday. Freshman Cameron Thomas, a very highly-touted recruit, had 27 points – more than double any teammate. He averages 22.8 points per game to lead the Tigers and his 187 made free throws are No. 1 nationally.

Sophomore Trendon Watford, another once-touted recruit, had 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers shot just 40.3 per cent and that certainly won’t work against Michigan, but the Bonnies are one of the nation’s top defensive teams. LSU did dominate the boards to the tune of a 49-30 advantage. The margin of victory was the Tigers’ fourth-largest in NCAA Tournament school history and biggest since a 16-point win over Iona on their way to the 2006 Final Four. LSU is 5-0-1 ATS in its past six overall.

Michigan Wolverines

Michigan (21-4) did not cover a huge number in its first-round 82-66 victory over No. 16 Texas Southern – a team coached by Johnny Jones, an LSU alum and former head coach there. U-M has its own freshman sensation in big man Hunter Dickinson, and he had 16 points and three blocks before fouling out. Grad student Mike Smith led the Wolverines, who were outscored by two in the second half, with 18 points.

Michigan was without one of its best players in Isaiah Livers, who averaged 13.1 points and 6.0 rebounds in 23 games before suffering a stress fracture in his right foot. Livers will not play here, either, and that’s why I’m calling an upset.  Michigan is 1-5 ATS in its past six Monday games.
