The clear storyline for this game is the coaching matchup between Hall of Famers Mike Krzyzewski of Duke and Tom Izzo of Michigan State. Coach K is retiring, so this will be it. It will be the sixth NCAA Tournament game between them, becoming the most common head coaching matchup in the history of the tournament. I honestly thought MSU (23-12) would lose in Round 1 to Davidson, but Michigan State won 74-73. Tom Izzo is Mr. March, after all. It took the game of his life by senior forward Joey Hauser, who had a career-high 27 points on 9-for-12 shooting. After the Wildcats took the lead of the game at five points in the second half, Hauser and Gabe Brown hit back-to-back 3-pointers with 6:04 and 5:24 left in the second half to spur an 8-0 run. MSU point guard Tyson Walker was in some question due to injury but played and had six point and three assists in 25 minutes. The Spartans are 5-0 ATS in their past five games.
Duke Blue Devils (2)
Duke as expected had little trouble with No. 15 Cal State Fullerton on Friday, 78-61. Freshman Paolo Banchero, maybe the top pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, had 17 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double in the past four games. It’s 100 per cent that he will not be back next season. Mark Williams, perhaps the best defensive player in the nation, had 15 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. The Blue Devils improved to 31-4 in first-round games. They are 14-3 this season in road and neutral-site games. Playing in South Carolina and not all that far from campus, Duke has a big advantage for one more game. The Blue Devils are 4-1 SU in NCAA Tournament games playing at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Duke is 0-5 ATS in its past five games.
