VCU (11) vs. North Carolina (6) Bracket Prediction: March Madness Odds

Thursday night features a compelling 6 vs. 11 matchup in the South Region as No. 11 VCU faces No. 6 North Carolina at 6:50 p.m. ET on TNT from Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. The winner advances to the second round to face the winner of Illinois vs. Penn.

VCU enters the tournament fresh off another Atlantic 10 championship run in Phil Martelli Jr.’s first season, while North Carolina arrives with major questions after losing star freshman Caleb Wilson to injury in February.

The Tar Heels are 2.5-point favourites on the March Madness odds, with the total set at 153.5.

VCU Rams vs. North Carolina Tar Heels NCAA Tournament Point Spread and Betting

Since Caleb Wilson’s injury, North Carolina ranks around 50th nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency, while VCU ranks 47th offensively and 34th defensively during that same span. VCU forces takeaways at an above-average rate, while North Carolina ranks outside the top 300 in forcing turnovers and struggles defending the three-point line, allowing opponents to shoot roughly 36 per cent from deep.

Even without Wilson, UNC is 5-1 ATS in its last six games, 10-4 overall in its last 14, and has won nine consecutive games against opponents from the Atlantic 10. VCU is 6-3 ATS in its last nine contests, winners of six straight, but is just 1-8 in its last nine games as an underdog.

VCU Rams (11)

First-year head coach Phil Martelli Jr. has already made program history, guiding the Rams to consecutive conference tournament championships, which is something the program had never previously achieved. Seven different players averaged at least seven points per game, creating a steady offensive rotation that keeps pressure on opponents throughout the game.

Forward Lazar Djokovic and guard Terrence Hill Jr. earned First-Team All-A10 honours, with Hill leading the team at 14.1 points per game despite coming off the bench. Hill’s ability to create scoring opportunities off the bounce gives VCU a reliable offensive option late in games. Freshman Nyk Lewis, the A-10 Rookie of the Year, adds rebounding and versatility, while guard Brandon Jennings anchors the defence and leads the team in steals.

VCU’s biggest concern is interior defence. The Rams ranked last in the Atlantic 10 in paint points allowed, and their defensive efficiency dropped compared to last season as Martelli Jr. implemented a faster tempo.

North Carolina Tar Heels (6)

North Carolina’s tournament outlook changed dramatically when the team’s First-Team All-ACC freshman suffered a season-ending injury. Without Wilson, the Tar Heels have slipped significantly in the advanced metrics. Defensive efficiency has dropped sharply, and North Carolina now enters the tournament on a two-game losing streak following its ACC Tournament exit.

The player tasked with carrying the load is junior centre Henri Veesaar, who delivered a massive 28-point, 17-rebound performance in the Tar Heels’ loss to Clemson in the ACC Tournament. Veesaar’s ability to score inside, stretch the floor, and rebound at a high level makes him one of the most important players in this matchup.

Guard Seth Trimble remains another key contributor, but the supporting cast has been inconsistent. Transfer point guard Kyan Evans and freshman Derek Dixon have struggled to provide stability in the backcourt, and the Tar Heels’ bench has produced minimal scoring in recent games.

March Madness Prediction: Who Will Win VCU vs. North Carolina?

This matchup comes down to contrasting strengths. North Carolina has the most dominant interior player on the floor in Henri Veesaar, and he could produce another huge stat line.

However, VCU’s balanced guard play and strong perimeter shooting create difficult matchup problems for North Carolina’s defence, which struggles to contain three-point attempts. The Rams’ ability to force turnovers and generate efficient outside shooting opportunities will ultimately swing the game.

Outside of Veesar and VCU’s shooting, I don’t think there will be easy paths to scoring. Both teams feature defensive tendencies that could slow the overall scoring pace compared to the betting total.
