East Region play in the NCAA Tournament’s second round closes out Saturday night from Dallas, where third-seeded Texas Tech of the Big 12 should have a nice fan advantage in its March Madness Matchup against No. 6 Florida of the SEC.

NCAA Tournament Odds and Betting Analysis

That the Gators moved past Round 1 should surprise no one as they have in every NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011. They also have won their Round 2 game each appearance since. Last year, they were a No. 4 seed in the East Region and trounced No. 5 Virginia 65-39. That put UF into the Sweet Sixteen for the 11th time in school history and fifth in the last seven years.

Texas Tech is a football-first school (not that Florida isn’t) and doesn’t have quite the basketball resume of the Gators. This is only the Red Raiders’ second Big Dance this decade. The last time they reached the second round was under Bobby Knight in 2005. That club would beat Gonzaga but then lose in the Sweet 16 to West Virginia.

Florida is 2-0 all-time vs. Texas Tech, but the schools haven’t played since 1962. The winner advances to the regional semifinals in Boston, most likely to face No. 2 Purdue, although don’t be surprised if either No. 7 Arkansas or No. 10 Butler upset the Boilermakers in Round 2.

Florida Gators

Some thought Florida (21-12) might be upset by First Four winner and No. 11 seed St. Bonaventure on Thursday, but the Gators had little trouble in a 77-62 victory. Graduate transfer Egor Koulechov scored 20 points to lead Florida, with Jalen Hudson chipping in 16 points and Chris Chiozza 11 assists. Florida wasn’t great on offence in hitting 41.5 per cent, but the tired Bonnies managed just 35.4 per cent and 3-for-19 from long range. This will be UF’s second game vs. a Big 12 team as it also competed in the Big 12/SEC Challenge and beat visiting Baylor 81-60. The Bears were blown out early in the season at Texas Tech but beat the Red Raiders in a close game on Feb. 17.

Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Red Raiders (25-9) closed the season losing five of their final seven games but advanced with a 70-60 win Thursday over No. 14 Stephen F. Austin. Star Keenan Evans, whose toe injury contributed to TTU’s late-season struggles, scored 19 of his 23 points after halftime; Texas Tech was down three at intermission and by eight early in the second half. This will be TTU’s second game against an SEC school this season. On Jan. 27, the Red Raiders won at South Carolina 70-63 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. South Carolina split with Florida, winning 77-72 in Gainesville and losing 65-41 at home.
