The Aztecs slipped past No. 12 UAB 69-65 in the first round before dumping No. 13 Yale 85-57 in the second round. The Ivy League champions didn’t stand a chance, with SDSU jumping out to an early 10-0 lead and not looking back. The Aztecs played a strong defensive game, holding Yale to under 40 per cent shooting. LeDee had another strong performance with 26 points and nine rebounds, while Trammell finished with 18 points and five boards. San Diego State’s abysmal outside shooting, which averages31.7 per cent from three and ranks exactly 300th in the nation, will be the biggest factor that prevents them from getting past UConn.
Connecticut Huskies (1)
The Huskies have rolled to two blowout victories so far in the tournament, as they crushed No. 16 Stetson 91-52 in the first round and took out No. 9 Northwestern 75-58 in the second round. UConn dominated Northwestern from the opening tip-off, outscoring the Wildcats 40-18 in the first half alone and leading by as much as 30 points. Newton put up a game-high 20 points and 10 assists in the win, while Donovan Clingan had 14 points and 14 rebounds. This team is stacked with offensive firepower as they rank 21st in the nation in points per game (81.6) and fifth in field goal percentage (49.8 per cent). The Huskies have the advantage in size, scoring and physicality, so they should roll against SDSU.
