After five years with the New York Knicks, Amar’e Stoudamire has decided to move on. Once Stoudamire clears the NBA waivers period at 5p.m. Eastern today, he will be eligible to negotiate a new contract with any team interested in signing him. That team is reportedly the Dallas Mavericks.

The Knicks waived the veteran forward on Sunday night as the two parties reach a mutual agreement to buyout the remainder of Stoudamire’s contract, which is worth about $23 million in the final year. It was at that point that Stoudamire committed himself to signing with the Mavs, making the jump from a New York team with the worst record in the league and a half a season from a complete rebuild to the playoff contender in Dallas.

Stoudamire, 32, has been forthright in his wish to play for a championship caliber team. Currently the Mavericks are sitting at 36-19, good for fifth place in the Western Conference. Both the Phoenix Suns, Stoudamire’s former team, and the Los Angeles Clippers were rumored to be interested in singing the six-time All-Star, but the opportunity to add depth to Dallas’ bench and a chance at a deep playoff run was more attractive to Stoudamire.

Dallas will likely use Stoudamire as a role player, coming off the bench behind center Tyson Chandler and is likely to see time filling in at power forward for Dirk Nowitzki. The current offensive system the Mavs use employs high usage of pick-and-roll offense that plays well to Stoudamire’s strengths. He’s currently averaging 12 points and 6.8 rebounds in 36 games this season, which would be a nice contribution coming off the bench.

Stoudamire expressed the bittersweet departure from New York saying he was leaving the Knicks “with a heavy heart” on his Instagram account. In a statement released by the Knicks, Stoudamire expanded on his thoughts. “I feel truly blessed to have been able to play for the incredible New York fans. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to contribute positively on the court and in the community.”
