Could be a bit of a trap game for the Western Conference-leading Lakers on Tuesday when they welcome the Nets for their lone visit of the year.

Why might this be a trap for the Lakers? It’s by far the easiest opponent in a crazy-hard stretch. The Lakers hosted the Bucks last Friday, visited the Clippers on Sunday, and then host Houston and Denver to close out this week. Those are all NBA title contenders. Brooklyn is definitely not.

Next season, a Nets-Lakers game will be must-see TV assuming Anthony Davis re-signs with Los Angeles as a free agent this summer (and he will). That’s because it would feature L.A.’s dynamic duo of LeBron James and Davis against Brooklyn’s of Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.

Alas, Irving – LeBron’s former title-winning teammate in Cleveland – is out the rest of this season following shoulder surgery and Durant isn’t playing at all in 2019-20 as he rehabs his Achilles injury suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals with the Warriors vs. Toronto. A lot can happen this summer and over the next year or so, but a 2021 NBA Finals of Nets-Lakers is a very realistic possibility.

NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Since the Nets entered the NBA for the 1976-77 campaign, the Lakers have lost only six season series to them. It happened last year, but L.A. goes for the sweep here as it won 128-113 in Brooklyn on Jan. 23. LeBron had a triple-double of 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Davis had 16 points and 11 rebounds. L.A. was 19-for-38 from deep. Irving was healthy then and had 20 points, but the Nets were outscored by 26 points when he was on the court.

Los Angeles is 6-4 straight up in the past 10 meetings and 5-3-2 ATS.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets surprised many around the NBA by firing highly-respected coach Kenny Atkinson – he’ll have another job next season – on Saturday. Reports were that Atkinson lost the locker room and that Irving was the loudest voice pushing for a change. Atkinson’s top assistant, former Magic coach Jacque Vaughn, will coach out the rest of this season. Names like Ty Lue and Mark Jackson are being bandied about as the next full-time guy.

Brooklyn won its first game under Vaughn on Sunday, 110-107 over the visiting Chicago Bulls. Spencer Dinwiddie had 24 points and Caris LeVert 23 points. Atkinson is credited with turning both of those guys into very good NBA players. Vaughn made a change to the starting lineup, putting DeAndre Jordan in the first five and having Jarrett Allen come off the bench. Jordan responded with 11 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. The Nets are 3-8 ATS in their past 11 vs. Western Conference foes.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers have won four in a row and had an incredibly impressive weekend in beating both the Bucks and Clippers. LeBron made the MVP race an actual race by outplaying betting favourite Giannis Antetokounmpo and then Kawhi Leonard. The 35-year-old James is averaging 30.3 points and 10.0 assists over his past nine, the oldest player in league history to average at least 30 points and 10 helpers over any nine-game span. The Lakers beat two of the top four teams in the NBA in back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 5, 2009. That Lakers team won it all. This one might too. L.A. is 6-1 ATS in its past seven games.
