After the Jazz took Wednesday’s game over the Mavericks 116-104, the back half of Dallas and Utah’s two-game series is set to go down on Friday in Utah.

The Jazz opened as four points favourites to win on the NBA odds with a total of 220.5.

Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Mavericks have struggled to handle Utah for a few years. Dallas has dropped nine of their last 11 games against the Jazz and eight of their last nine games in Utah. The Mavs have covered the spread in exactly half of their 18 games this season, but have only done it twice at home compared to seven times on the road.

Utah has rewarded bettors, this season. The Jazz are 13-5 against the spread and they have covered in their last seven home games.

Dallas Mavericks

A 30-point effort from Luka Doncic wasn’t enough to help the Mavs avoid slipping even further down the standings with their third straight loss. Even with the return of Dorian Finney-Smith (out nine games), Josh Richardson (nine games) and Dwight Powell (eight games) from the COVID-19 safety protocol, the only other Dallas players to finish with more than eight points were Tim Hardaway Jr. (19 points) and Kristaps Porzingis (18 points).

Despite Dallas missing all six of their 3-point attempts in the first quarter, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Mavs. Hardaway eventually finished with four 3’s and now sits two short of 1,000 for his career and James Johnson had a season-high four blocked shots. While Dallas did manage to outscore the Jazz in the fourth quarter, the Mavs never pulled within 12 points of tying the game in the second half.

Utah Jazz

Even without leading scorer Donovan Mitchell in the lineup, the Jazz not only avoided trailing at any point, but their 10th straight win vaulted them to the top spot in the NBA. Mitchell, who is averaging 23.4 points per game, was sidelined for the first time this season after entering the NBA’s concussion protocol. Rudy Gobert had a monstrous game, finishing with 29 points and 20 rebounds (both season highs), while Jordan Clarkson (game-high 31 points) and Joe Ingles (21 points) both had a season high in points.

Utah took control right from the start, shooting 53.7 per cent from the floor, hitting 14 3-pointers in the first three quarters and leading by as much as 25 points in the third quarter. The Jazz have been so dominant over the past few weeks, they have only trailed for a combined 57 seconds in the fourth quarter during their 10 game win streak. Mitchell and Derrick Favors (missed Wednesday with back stiffness) are both listed as questionable for Friday.
