Luka Doncic was the first player to score 40 points in his playoff debut but it was in a losing effort. The Mavs look to even the series on Wednesday.

The second-seeded Los Angeles Clippers look to take a 2-0 lead over the No.  7 Dallas Mavericks in their best-of-7 NBA Western Conference playoff series on Wednesday night from the bubble in Orlando. It’s the latest of the four games with a 9 ET tip, and the Clippers are favoured on the NBA odds.

NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis

We projected the Clippers to win Game by a score of 116-110 – and they won it 118-110. L.A. was a 6.5-point favourite and was able to cover the spread (all four favourites covered in Monday’s NBA action) thanks to two Kawhi Leonard free throws with about eight seconds left. Dallas then missed a long 3-pointer before time expired.

The Clippers are +150 co-favourites with the Los Angeles Lakers to win the Western Conference, which is something the Clips have never done. They could be favoured by late Tuesday night if the Lakers lose Game 1 of their series to the Portland Trail Blazers. Dallas is +2500 to win the West. The Mavericks have failed to cover the past five meetings.

Dallas Mavericks

Dallas is probably going to win at least one NBA title over the next decade or so as long as incomparable 21-year-old superstar Luka Doncic stays healthy. With all due respect to Leonard and Paul George, Doncic was the best player on the floor in Game 1 with 42 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals – although he did turn the ball over a whopping 11 times (career high). Doncic joined Magic Johnson, LeBron James (twice) and Tracy McGrady as the only players to score 40 points at the age of 21 or younger in an NBA postseason game. Doncic was the first player to score 40 points in his playoff debut.

He didn’t get much help, though, especially when the team’s second-best player, big man Kristaps Porzingis, was ejected in the third quarter after picking up a second technical foul. It was nothing that should get him suspended for Game 2. The Mavs are 2-5 ATS in their past seven as underdogs.

Los Angeles Clippers

Leonard was also fantastic in his Clippers playoff debut with 29 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. George added 27 points. Marcus Morris had 19 points and six rebounds and helped play good defence on Doncic, who was 3-for-6 shooting with four turnovers when guarded by Morris. Guards Patrick Beverley and Landry Shamet were both in question due to injury but both played. Excellent bench player Montrezl Harrell didn’t play in the regular-season restart in the bubble due to the death of his grandmother, but he was in there Monday and had six points in 15 minutes.

The Clippers outscored Dallas by 13 after the Porzingis ejection, going from five points down to the eight-point victory. The Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their past six games.
