It will be a win-or-go-home situation for the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets when they square off in the Eastern Conference play-in tournament on Tuesday night in Charlotte. The loser of this No. 9 vs. No. 10 matchup is eliminated, while the winner faces whoever loses the No. 7 vs. No. 8 game between the Magic and 76ers.

These two Southeast Division rivals faced each other four times during the regular season, with Miami winning on three occasions. However, Charlotte dominated the most recent encounter 136-106 at home on March 17. They have played only one somewhat competitive game. The Heat prevailed 128-120 in Charlotte on March 6; the other three matchups were all decided by at least 18 points.

Miami is a 5.5-point favourite to win on the NBA odds, with the total pegged at 230.5.

Heat vs. Hornets NBA Betting Odds

Charlotte was a -5.5 and -7.5 favourite in its two home games against Miami during the regular season. The Heat were -4.5 and -7.5 favourites when they played at home in this matchup. It’s no surprise to see the Hornets priced in that same range with home-court advantage on Tuesday. Although they have been nothing special (21-20) at the Spectrum Center in 2025-26, Miami is a woeful 17-24 as the visiting team this season.

The Heat are 4-1 against the spread in the last five head-to-head meetings. However, they are 3-6 ATS in their last nine overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five road games. The Hornets are 0-3 ATS in their last three overall. As for the over/under, the over is 3-1 in the last four head-to-head and 7-2 in Miami’s last nine games. The under, though, is 9-3 in Charlotte’s last 12 overall.

Miami Heat

Both teams went all out until the very end of the regular season in an effort to get an automatic playoff spot or to at least secure a home game in the play-in rounds. Unfortunately for the Heat, that effort did not go well. They lost 10 of their last 15 contests – including to opponents close to them in the East standings such as Toronto (twice), Charlotte and Orlando.

Role players Nikola Jovic (ankle) and Dru Smith (foot) have been ruled out, while Pelle Larsson (leg) is questionable. Norman Powell missed four games in late March and early April but returned for the final three games. Powell (21.7 ppg) scored 25 points against Atlanta in the regular-season finale.

Charlotte Hornets

The Hornets are pretty much good to go from an injury standpoint as they embark on their postseason campaign. Only second-year big man PJ Hall, who suffered a fractured ankle in February and is out for the year, has any kind of designation heading into Tuesday’s contest.

Charlotte’s other young stars are ready to lead the charge. Rookie of the Year candidate Kon Knueppel (18.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.4 apg) absolutely torched Miami during the regular season, averaging 24.5 ppg in four encounters while shooting 18-for-40 (45 percent) from three-point land. LaMelo Ball (20.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 7.1 apg) also averaged more than four triples per contest against the Heat.

NBA Prediction: Who Will Win Heat vs. Hornets?

Giving 5.5 points to a Miami team that has much more recent playoff experience does not feel like a good idea. That being said, the Hornets have been a much better team dating back to mid-January with an amazing 28-10 record in their last 38 games. Charlotte should be able to get the job done at home, but this game will likely go down to the wire. Let’s go with the Hornets to win 117-113.
