Celtics vs. Pistons NBA Odds, Prediction and Picks: New-Look Boston Opens in Detroit
Tipoff is scheduled for 3pm ET, and both clubs hope to challenge the defending champion New York Knicks.
Detroit finished atop the East with a 60-22 record before losing to Cleveland in seven games in the conference semifinals. Boston finished second, but the Celtics enter the new campaign with a different look after trading Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia for Paul George following a disappointing first-round exit against the 76ers.
The Pistons went 3-1 in the preseason, while Boston also impressed during its exhibition schedule.
Celtics vs. Pistons NBA Betting Odds
The Pistons enter Tuesday’s season opener as 1.5-point favourites, although the Celtics have a slight edge on the money line at -112 compared with Detroit’s -108. The total is set at 221.5 points.
The narrow spread suggests another competitive matchup between the two Eastern Conference contenders. Detroit won three of four meetings last season, including both home games, while three of the four contests went Under.
Boston will be adjusting to a new-look lineup, while Detroit returns much of the group that finished atop the East. That familiarity could give the Pistons an advantage in the opener.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics underwent one of the NBA’s most surprising offseason changes, sending Brown to Philadelphia and acquiring George. The veteran forward gives Boston another accomplished scorer and defender alongside Jayson Tatum.
George provided an encouraging glimpse of his defensive ability during the preseason, collecting five steals and six deflections in a convincing victory over Philadelphia.
Tatum’s return from the Achilles injury that interrupted his career in 2025 is another reason Boston believes it can contend. His scoring, rebounding and playmaking make the Celtics dangerous whenever he’s healthy.
Derrick White will also have plenty on his plate, particularly on defence against Cade Cunningham. White gives Boston another outside shooting option, but keeping Detroit’s guards in check could be his biggest assignment.
The Celtics have enough talent to contend in the East, but replacing Brown’s scoring and leadership won’t happen overnight.
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons enter the season with something they haven’t faced in years: genuine expectations.
Cade Cunningham was a handful for opponents last season, averaging 23.9 points, 9.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds. Boston will have its hands full keeping Cunningham out of the paint and preventing him from finding open teammates.
Jalen Duren gives Detroit a physical presence around the basket, while Ausar Thompson supplies defensive range and athleticism.
The Pistons added John Collins and Isaiah Joe this offseason, moves designed to improve spacing and give Cunningham additional offensive options.
However, losing defensive standout Isaiah Stewart creates questions about Detroit’s toughness and interior depth.
Coach J.B. Bickerstaff must prove last season’s success wasn’t a one-year surprise.
NBA Prediction: Who Will Win Celtics vs. Pistons?
Boston has the championship experience, but Detroit enjoys home-court advantage and greater continuity among its key players.
Cunningham should dictate the tempo, while Duren’s work inside could create problems for the Celtics.
Expect a competitive opener featuring plenty of defensive intensity. George and Tatum will keep Boston close, but Detroit’s familiarity and home crowd provide the difference.
