The Toronto Raptors are 1-0 since trading All-Star Pascal Siakam early Wednesday after shockingly blowing out Miami that night and look to complete a three-game homestand at 2-1 Thursday when they host former Dinos star DeMar DeRozan and the Chicago Bulls.

Chicago is a 2-point favourite to win on the NBA odds.

Bulls vs. Raptors NBA Betting Odds

This might be the last time that All-Star and former Raptors franchise icon DeMar DeRozan visits Toronto as a member of the Bulls because he’s very likely to be dealt ahead of next month’s trade deadline. Chicago isn’t going anywhere this season and the 34-year-old DeRozan, who still holds the Raptors career scoring mark with 13,296 points, is set for unrestricted free agency this summer.

It would be malpractice by the Bulls front office not to get something for him before DeRozan potentially walks anyway because the team is nowhere near title contention and could miss the playoffs entirely. He has been linked to the Lakers along with teammate Zach LaVine and defensive-oriented guard Alex Caruso. Toronto has been the most active team so far in trades this season, but Chicago might soon take that spot.

Thursday is the third of four regular-season meetings between the teams with the series concluding on Jan. 30 in Chicago. They have split the first two, each winning at home. DeRozan is averaging 26.0 points in the two and LaVine 22.0. LaVine is averaging 23.4 ppg in his last five matchups with Toronto, including two outings with 30 points or more. Centre Nikola Vucevic has recorded a double-double in seven of his last 10 games in the series, averaging 17.5 ppg and 12.0 rpg during this stretch.

Chicago leads the all-time series 56-48 but trails 27-25 as the road team and has dropped the past four as such. They have split the past 10 overall against the spread.

Chicago Bulls

Chicago has been playing better of late but can’t beat the good teams for the most part and comes off a 109-91 loss at Cleveland on Monday — and the Cavs were without two of their best players. Any thoughts the Bulls front office had of perhaps keeping this team together through the trade deadline should have ended there. Coby White led the Bulls with 18 points, and he has been one of the league’s breakout players over the past six weeks or so. White already has a career-high 18 games with a least 20 points and will take over as lead guard once Zach LaVine is traded.

The Bulls rank tied for second in least turnovers per game (12.4), third in total points off turnovers (741), fourth in total deflections (643), fourth in steals (326), tied for sixth in points off turnovers per game (17.6) and 10th in steals per game (7.8). Chicago is listing young players Ayo Dosunmu and Patrick Williams as questionable. Both are good defenders.

Toronto Raptors

The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 8, but the Raptors apparently are done with the heavy lifting already. Of course, they sent out OG Anunoby to the Knicks a few weeks ago and both RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley have played very well since coming back from New York. On Wednesday, the bigger shoe dropped as All-Star Pascal Siakam was sent to Indiana in a three-team deal that included New Orleans on the fringes. Toronto got back solid guard Bruce Brown from Indiana along with throw-ins Jordan Nwora and Kira Lewis Jr. (him from the Pelicans) and three first-round picks — and those are the bounty. Clearly the plan going forward is a young nucleus of Scottie Barnes, Barrett and Quickley with Barnes poised to get a max extension before next season and Quickley due a huge raise as a pending restricted free agent. Both Anunoby and Siakam are set for free agency and what would have been the point of going over the luxury tax to re-sign those two and Barnes if the Raptors weren’t even a playoff team with them?

Brown is one of those glue guys that every contender needs and played an important role on the defending champion Denver Nuggets last season before leaving in free agency for Indiana. The 27-year-old, a good defender, is averaging 12.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists this season. Not clear if he will debut Thursday. The Raptors didn’t miss Siakam on Wednesday in blowing the doors off a good Heat team, 121-97, but that seems to happen a lot in basketball: A team plays extremely well immediately after losing a star player almost on adrenaline but then reality kicks in. Toronto is 2-5 SU in the second of a back-to-back this season.
