The Celtics fended off the Sixers’ second-half rally to escape with a 95-86 win in Game 6 on Thursday night, but have fallen to defeat in three of their past four home dates including two of three during this series. The Sixers failed to shake the ghost of playoff failures past with Thursday’s loss and face a huge challenge in their bid to return to the East final for the first time since 2001.

The Celtics return home as 6.5-point favourites in this series-deciding contest. The 76ers lag as +220 moneyline underdogs on the NBA odds, and the total for Game 7 is pegged at just 201.

The Celtics improved to 7-4 in their past 11 overall clashes against the Sixers with their Game 6 victory, but sport a middling 4-4 record in their past eight home dates against Philly. Game 6 bucked the trend so far in the series, with the total going UNDER for just the second time.

However, Boston has enjoyed regular success in recent game 7 appearances, winning five of their past six including three of four on home court. Conversely, the 76ers ride a three-game losing streak in Game 7 situations including an 85-75 loss in Boston in 2012, and have not won a Game 7 on the road since bouncing the Celtics from the East final way back in 1982.

Philadelphia 76ers

The 76ers showed some character in Game 6 by overcoming the Celtics’ fast start. Trailing by as many as 16 points in the second quarter, the Sixers clawed their way back into the game and briefly seized the lead on the strength of a steady 20-10 run after the half. However, it was far from pretty, with Sixers shooters hitting just 36.1% from the field and a brutal 8-for from downtown.

Joel Embiid led the attack with 26 points and 10 rebounds. However, his teammates simply did not get him the ball enough, particularly during the final frame, with The Process going just 3-for-6 over the final 12 minutes. It was also another disappointing night for James Harden, who recorded just 13 points on 4-for-16 shooting, including a 0-for-6 from beyond the arc. Harden has also averaged just 14.5 points in his past two trips to Boston. However, Harden has also exploded for 42 or more points twice in this series, leaving Sixers fans wondering which version of The Beard will show up on Sunday afternoon.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics did what was necessary to extend this series with Thursday’s victory. However, they failed to dominate the way that so many observers expected going into this series. Like the Sixers, the Celtics struggled to convert in Game 6, converting just 42.6% of field goal attempts, and failed to score more than 24 points in a quarter after opening the contest with a torrid 15-3 run. Indeed, the Celtics needed a huge fourth-quarter effort from Jayson Tatum in the final frame to seal the win. Tatum sealed the win while scoring 10 of his 19 points on the night in the final 4:14 of the contest. Marcus Smart also maintained his steady pace with a team-high 22 points. But unless the Celtics can find a higher gear and score with more consistency, they will be lucky to escape with a win on Sunday afternoon.
