The Sixers fended off a furious second-half rally by the Celtics to eke out a 116-115 overtime win on home court in Game 4, knotting the series at two games apiece.

After falling short in Sunday’s contest, the Celtics return home perched as 7.5-point favourites on the Tuesday NBA odds. The 76ers are pegged as lengthy +239 moneyline underdogs in their bid to push the Celtics to the brink elimination, and the total is listed at 213.0.

With their victory in Game 4, the Sixers have now earned the win in three of nine overall dates with the Celtics, and have also won in three of their past seven visits to Beantown. However, Philadelphia is winless in six straight Game 5 appearances in second round playoff action, with five of those defeats coming in series deadlocked at 2-2. Conversely, the Celtics are 5-1 in their past six Game 6 clashes on home parquet when playing in the second round, including two wins over Philadelphia.

Sunday’s loss has not dampened the Celtics’ position on the NBA championship odds, where they still lead the way as strong +142 chalk, with the Sixers lagging at +889. Boston also remains positioned as a short -357 bet on the NBA playoff series prices, while Philly trails as a +245 underdog.

Philadelphia 76ers

Fresh after back-to-back defeats in Gams 3 and 4, the 76ers needed their biggest stars to step up to avoid getting pushed to brink of elimination on Sunday afternoon. James Harden answered the call with his second clutch performance of the series, scoring a game-high 42 points including the game-tying and game-winning baskets, and came close to recording a triple double with nine assists and eight rebounds.

Harden also led the way in the Sixers’ stunning 119-115 upset win in Boston to open the series. However, the 33-year-old has struggled to string together game-breaking performances so far in the playoffs. Harden averaged just 14 points in Games 2 and 3, and has failed to drop at least 20 points in consecutive contests since early March. Joel Embiid attracted extra attention from the Celtics defence in Game 5, but still recorded 34 points and has averaged 32 points and 13 boards in the past two games.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics turned in an impressive comeback effort in Game 4 after trailing by as many as 15 points after recess, and looked to be on their way to a 3-1 series lead while taking just 90 seconds to erase an eight-point deficit early in the fourth quarter.

Jayson Tatum played a crucial role in the club’s second-half rally. Tatum once again led the club with 24 points and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds while seeing 47 minutes of action. However, the 25-year-old has turned in mixed results on home court, scoring fewer than 20 points in two of his past three appearances, and has converted more than 50% from the field just twice in his past five at TD Garden. Jaylen Brown maintained his consistent scoring pace with 23 points. Brown has averaged 23.5 points in the series and 26 points in five home appearances during these playoffs. While the Celtics’ balanced attack should provide them with all the tools needed to run up the score, their struggles to effectively cover both Embiid and Harden has to be far better than what they demonstrated in Sunday’s loss.
