Gastelum is coming off a unanimous decision win over Chris Curtis in his most recent fight at UFC 287, but has claimed just two victories during a seven-fight stretch that began with a failed bid for the interim UFC middleweight crown at UFC 236. Brady has been idle since suffering the first defeat of his professional MMA career, a second-round TKO loss to Belal Muhammad in October 2022 at UFC 280, but returns to action pegged at No. 8 on the UFC welterweight rankings.

Now sporting a 15-1 pro MMA record, Brady will enter the octagon at Moody Center listed as a slim -120 favourite on the UFC Austin odds. Gastelum sports +100 odds of improving his pro record fighting at 170 pounds to 4-1.

Sean Brady UFC Fight Night Austin Odds

One of the fastest rising stars in the UFC welterweight division, Sean Brady saw his ascension halted by last year’s stunning upset loss to Belal Muhammad. That defeat snapped a run of five straight wins to start his UFC career, including submission victories over Ismail Naurdiev and Christian Aguilera.

The former Cage Fury FC welterweight champ is an accomplished grappler, who sits among the active leaders in the UFC welterweight division in several categories including takedown accuracy and control time percentage. Brady also possesses underrated striking ability, and ranks eighth all-time with a significant strike accuracy of 53.1 per cent. However, Brady will not want to push his luck going toe-to-toe with Gastelum, and will need to bring the action to the mat to gain an early advantage against a worthy opponent who has seen two of his eight pro losses come by tap out.

Kelvin Gastelum Fight Night Austin Odds

Assuming he has made weight, something he struggled to do in his first go around as a welterweight, Gastelum is back home in his return to the 170-pound division. The 32-year-old southpaw is an accomplished wrestler. But like Brady, Gastelum has the ability throw hands, averaging 3.63 significant strikes landed per minute.

But what makes Gastelum particularly dangerous in a slugfest is his ability to take a lot of punishment. Since joining the UFC a decade ago, Gastelum has absorbed an average of 3.31 significant strikes per minute, and has seen seven of his past eight ring appearances go the distance including a trio of fights that went a full five rounds.

UFC Fight Night Austin Prediction: Brady vs Gastelum

Brady’s loss to Muhammad should serve as a healthy dose of experience. Now poised to pick up where he left off before that defeat, Brady must dictate the terms of engagement early on, and should not underestimate Gastelum’s ability to match him with level changes. This fight promises to be a real banger that will go a full 15 minutes, with big implications for both these fighters’ hopes of making gains on the UFC rankings.

Prediction: Kelvin Gastelum by decision (+275)
