There was a big upset in the headline bout of UFC 201 last Saturday night as Tyron Woodley, a +165 underdog, upset welterweight champion Robbie Lawler by first-round knockout. What will be in store at UFC Fight Night 92 this Saturday night from the Vivint Smart House Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah? The card is headlined by a featherweight non-title fight between Yair Rodriguez and Alex Caceres. Rodriguez is a -335 favourite on Sports Interaction MMA odds with Caceres at +240.
Rodriguez vs. Caceres
As a quick aside from UFC 201, Woodley said after his win that he would potentially like to next fight Canadian Georges St-Pierre, arguably the best welterweight champion in UFC history, possibly in November at New York City’s storied Madison Square Garden. And St-Pierre has reciprocated the interest. St-Pierre, 35, hasn’t fought since UFC 167 in November 2013. He vacated his title and took a break from the sport after that but is ready to return. The UFC hasn’t booked him a fight yet. Stephen Thompson is currently rated as the UFC’s No. 1 welterweight contender so he might get the first shot even though Woodley says he doesn’t want to fight him.
As for UFC Fight Night 92, it’s the UFC’s first event in Utah and the main card will get underway at approximately 10 p.m. ET and is televised by Fox Sports 1. Rodriguez (8-1) is a 23-year-old from Mexico. He is 4-0 since joining the UFC, last in the Octagon in April at UFC 197 and beating Andre Fili by second-round knockout (head kick). It was quite a sensational knockout blow. UFC announced Joe Rogan called it a “flying roundhouse kick” and a “shin to the chin.” Rodriguez, nicknamed “Pantera,” is considered one of the featherweight division’s rising stars and won his season of “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America” in 2014.
Caceres (12-8) is a 28-year-old American. Since a three-fight losing streak, he has won two in a row in the Octagon. He last fought in June at UFC 199 and beat Cole Miller by unanimous decision. Caceres took that fight with less than two weeks notice.
The favoured result in MMA betting is Rodriguez to win by knockout, TKO or disqualification at +125. Caceres doing so is +1400. Rodriguez winning in Round 1 or by points/technical decision are both +300 favourites on the round prop. A draw is a +5000 long shot.
Bermudez vs. “Jason”
The co-headline bout also features featherweights, and Dennis Bermudez is at -235 against Rony Mariano Bezerra. Bermudez (15-5) is No. 8 in the UFC’s featherweight rankings. The 29-year-old American stopped a two-fight losing streak in February by beating Tatsuya Kawajiri by unanimous decision. Bermudez is the only fighter in UFC featherweight history to register three knockdowns in a single fight. He did it against Jim Hettes at UFC 171.
Bezerra (14-5) is a 32-year-old from Brazil also known as Rony “Jason” because he wears a Friday the 13th Jason mask into the ring. He hasn’t fought since a no-decision in May 2015 against Damon Jackson. Bezerra won the fight but it was changed to a no contest after he tested positive for a diuretic.
UFC Fight Night 92 Predictions
Rodriguez by KO, TKO or DQ at +125 and Bermudez by points or technical decision at +150 on MMA odds.
