UFC Fight Night 246 Odds, Prediction: Mike Malott vs. Trevin Giles

Mike Malott and Trevin Giles are both coming off losses as they look to shed their unranked welterweight status.

Malott is a fairly heavy -350 favourite to win on the MMA odds, while Giles is a +260 underdog.

As mentioned, the 32-year-old Malott is unranked in the welterweight division. The Burlington, Ontario native joined the UFC in 2022 after winning Dana White’s Contender Series 42 and he looked lights out in his first three fights. Malott won by first-round TKO, first-round submission and second-round submission before his first UFC loss (third-round TKO) against Neil Magny in January.

“Proper” is 10-2-1 overall in his MMA career and he boasts an elite 100 per cent finish rate. He’ll have a one-inch height advantage against Giles, but he’s at a one-inch reach disadvantage. Malott is definitely the more productive grappler, with six of his 10 career wins coming by submission while averaging 1.01 takedowns per 15 minutes. The Canadian will have a distinct advantage if this fight ends up on the ground.

Trevin Giles UFC Fight Night Odds

Like Malott, Giles is 32 and unranked in the welterweight division. Fighting out of Houston Texas, Giles joined the UFC in 2017, fighting in the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions until dropping to welterweight in 2022. Welterweight hasn’t gone well for the American as he is 2-3 in the division, including a first-round submission loss and a second-round TKO loss in his last two fights.

Giles is 16-6 overall in his career and this will be his fourth straight fight against a Dana White Contender Series alum. The only win he earned in the first three of those fights was against Preston Parsons and that came by split decision. Giles is the more accurate striker, landing 55 per cent of significant strikes, so I expect him to try to keep this fight standing up. Either way, Giles will have his hands full against Malott.

Malott is better than the last two fighters Giles faced and Giles looked out of his league in those fights. I don’t see how this fight goes the distance, so give me Malott to win by submission (+200).
