Jessica Eye vs. Cynthia Calvillo UFC Odds
Eye is ranked as the No. 1 contender in the flyweight division (125 pounds) behind champion Valentina Shevchenko, while Calvillo is ranked 10th in the strawweight division, whose champion is Weili Zhang. On the odds for Saturday, Eye is a slight -120 favourite with Calvillo at -110.
The 33-year-old Eye (15-7) could get another title shot at Shevchenko with a win; those two fought at UFC 238 in June 2019 and Shevchenko defended her belt with a second-round KO (head kick). “Evil Eye” bounced back last December by beating Viviane Araujo via unanimous decision. Eye usually wins via the judges, having done so 11 of 15 times – just once by submission.
Five of her seven losses are by decision. She lands 3.79 significant strikes per minute (absorbs 3.39) and averages 0.46 takedowns per 15 minutes with 45 per cent accuracy. Her takedown defence is 59 per cent.
Calvillo (8-1-1), 32, started her career at flyweight but then moved to strawweight for a few years. Her lone career loss came in that division to Carla Esparza at UFC 219 in December 2017 by unanimous decision. Calvillo, who has decided to return to flyweight because she struggled to make weight in the other division, hasn’t lost since but comes off a December majority draw vs. Marina Rodriguez.
Calvillo has won three times by decision, three by submission and twice by KO/TKO. She averages 4.12 significant strikes per minute (absorbs 3.54) and 1.83 takedowns per 15 with 43 per cent accuracy. Her takedown defence is 69 per cent.
Charles Jourdain vs. Andre Fili UFC Fight Night Odds
Earlier on the main card, Quebec’s Jourdain is a +170 underdog on the UFC odds board against the American Andre Fili (-230) in a featherweight matchup. Alexander Volkanovski is the division champion and will defend that belt in a rematch vs. No. 1 Max Holloway at the new Fight Island on July 11 at UFC 251, organization president Dana White announced this week. Neither Jourdain nor Fili is ranked.
“Air” Jourdan, 24, is 10-2 with seven of his wins by KO or TKO and both losses via decision. He comes off a very impressive second-round TKO (punches) victory over Doo Ho Choi in December. Both were awarded Fight of the Night as Jourdain was knocked down in Round 1. That was only Jourdain’s second fight in the UFC. He lands 4.85 significant strikes per minute (absorbs 4.89) and has yet to have a takedown in his two UFC fights.
The 29-year-old Fili (20-7) has yet to win more than two straight fights since joining the UFC in 2013 but also hasn’t lost back-to-back bouts. He comes off a unanimous decision defeat to Sodiq Yusuff in January. All three judges scored it 29-28. “Touchy” Fili lands 4.00 significant strikes per minute (absorbs 3.96) and 2.49 takedowns per 15 minutes with 45 per cent accuracy. His takedown defence is 69 per cent.
“Air” Jourdain vs. “Touchy” Fili … this gets the award for Nickname Fight of the Night if not year.
UFC Fight Night 172 Predictions
Both fights end via decision with Calvillo and Fili prevailing.
