When you’ve been around as long as Andrei Arlovski, you’ve seen a lot in MMA, but Wednesday’s bout with UFC newcomer Philipe Lins without any fans in the stands amid coronavirus restrictions will definitely be a different experience for him. Lins is a -165 favourite on the UFC odds page with Arlovski at +125.
The 34-year-old Lins is from Brazil and has a fabulous nickname: “Monstro.” This will be his UFC debut as Lins signed a deal with the organization in February after winning the Professional Fighters League heavyweight title on New Year’s Eve 2018 via fourth-round TKO (knees and punches) of Josh Copeland.
That was Lins’ fourth straight victory. The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder has won 57 per cent of his fights by KO/TKO and just two by decision. His bouts average 1.9 rounds in victories but 3.2 rounds in losses – all three defeats by KO or TKO. Lins was last beaten in August 2017 by Vadim Nemkov in Bellator. Arlovski (28-19), 41, is from Belarus and a former UFC heavyweight champion. He won that title way back at UFC 51 with a first-round submission (ankle lock) of Tim Sylvia. “The Pit Bull” defended the belt twice before losing back-to-back fights vs. Sylvia in 2006.
Arlovski left the UFC in 2008 and bounced around a bit. He fought Fedor Emeliananko in January 2009 for the Affliction heavyweight title but lost by first-round KO (punch) and hasn’t gotten a title shot anywhere since — and surely won’t. He lost to Jairzinho Rozenstruik by first-round KO (punch) in his most recent fight in December and has one victory in his past six. Arlovski does hold UFC records for most wins (17) and most fights (30) in heavyweight history.
