There’s UFC action this Wednesday night (Eastern time) as the organization is taking advantage of its new Fight Island in Abu Dhabi with a busy few weeks there.
The co-main event features a pair of American flyweights in Tim Elliott and Ryan Benoit. Elliott is the -130 favourite on the MMA odds with Benoit at +100. The over-under is 2.5 rounds, with the over a -190 favourite.
Benoit vs. Elliott UFC Fight Island Odds
There is no current flyweight champion after Henry Cejudo vacated the title last year and then retired. No. 1 Deiveson Figueiredo and No. 2 Joseph Benavidez will battle it out for that belt on Saturday at Fight Island. Figueiredo beat Benavidez in February but because Figueiredo was over the 125-pound weight limit at the weigh-in, he was not given the title.
The 33-year-old Elliott (15-11) is ranked No. 12 in the division but that largely just says how weak overall the flyweight ranks are because Elliott is on a three-fight losing streak. Elliott fought most recently on May 30 and was a second-round submission loser (arm-triangle choke) to No. 11 Brandon Royval. There had been some talk that the UFC was going to release Elliott after that loss (it probably will if he loses again here), and he admitted thinking about retirement.
Elliott is best known for winning the finale of “the Ultimate Fighter 16” against Jared Papazian in August 2013. Elliott’s UFC bouts average 11:46 of fight time and the southpaw lands 3.41 significant strikes per minute (absorbs 2.53) with 4.31 takedowns per 15 minutes with 55 per cent accuracy. His takedown defence is 58 per cent. Elliott has won six times by decision, six by submission and three by KO/TKO. He has been beaten five times each by decision and submission and once by KO/TKO.
Benoit (10-6), 30, is unranked and has alternated wins and losses over his past 10. He comes off a split-decision defeat to Heili Alateng in December 2019. Benoit was to face Tyson Nam on June 13 but withdrew for undisclosed reasons.
“Baby Face” lands 2.80 significant strikes per minute (absorbs 3.18) and 0.20 takedowns per 15 minutes with an accuracy of 16 per cent. His takedown defence is 64 per cent. Benoit’s UFC fights average 10:54. Eight of his 10 wins are by KO/TKO and four of his six losses via decision.
