The main event of Saturday’s UFC 327 card from Miami is for the vacant light heavyweight title as former champion Jiri Prochazka faces top contender Carlos Ulberg. Prochazka is a short favourite on the MMA odds with an over-under of just 2.5 rounds in the scheduled five-rounder.

Jiri Prochazka

Alex Pereira was the UFC light heavyweight champion and is the No. 5 pound-for-pound fighter in the organization, but he has vacated the belt to move up to heavyweight and pursue a historic title in a third different weight class. This will be the first time since UFC 295 in November 2023 that Pereira will not be involved in a UFC light heavyweight title fight.

The 33-year-old Prochazka, from the Czech Republic, is 33-5 with one draw in his professional MMA career and ranked as the No. 2 light heavyweight. He was the inaugural Rizin Fighting Federation light heavyweight king and the inaugural Gladiator Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion.

“BJP” won the UFC light heavyweight bout by beating Glover Teixeira by fifth-round submission (rear-naked choke) at UFC 275. But Prochazka lost the title next time out to Pereira via second-round TKO (elbows) and is 2-2 overall since – that other loss also to Pereira by second-round TKO (head kick and punches).

Prochazka is seeking to be the fourth fighter ever to win UFC light heavyweight title twice, joining Randy Couture, Jon Jones and Pereira. Prochazka is 6-0 in the UFC against everyone but Pereira and has a 100 per cent finish rate in the UFC (all six victories) and a 97% finish rate in his career (31 of 32 wins).

His six finishes since 2020 are tied for the second-most in the light heavyweight division, and he’s one of eight fighters in UFC history to earn a knockout stemming from a spinning back elbow. That happened in May 2021 vs. Dominick Reyes.

Prochazka’s lone non-stoppage win was via unanimous decision over Mark Tanios way back in September 2016 in the Rizin organization. His favoured method Saturday is KO/TKO/DQ at +140. Prochazka’s seven fight-night bonuses since 2020 are most in the light heavyweight division.

The 6-foot-3 Prochazka has a reach of 80 inches and averages 5.69 significant strikes per minute with 55 per cent accuracy and absorbs 5.60 with 45 per cent defence. His takedown average is 0.51 per 15 minutes with 60 per cent accuracy, and his takedown defence is 68 per cent.

Carlos Ulberg

The 35-year-old Ulberg, from New Zealand, is 13-1 in his MMA career and ranked No. 3 in the UFC light heavyweight division – he also competed once in professional boxing and did some kickboxing. This will be his first professional MMA title fight.

The lone career loss for “Black Jag” came in his first official UFC bout at UFC 259 as he was taken out via second-round KO by Kennedy Nzechukwu. Ulberg has won nine in a row since, the longest active winning streak in the UFC light heavyweight division and tied for second-longest in its history. All-time great Jon Jones holds the mark of 13.

The Kiwi has a 71 per cent finish rate career with eight of those via KO/TKO and one by submission. He had the third-fastest KO in division history in May 2024 by ending Alonzo Menifield just 12 seconds in via punches. The 6-foot-4 Ulberg lands 6.58 significant strikes per minute the UFC, the highest rate in light heavyweight history. He has earned fight bonuses in three of his past six wins. His favoured method Saturday is by KO/TKO/DQ at +175.

While Ulberg is an inch taller than his opponent, he is giving up three inches of reach. Considering this is his first title fight, Ulberg has never gone past three rounds. That this goes the full five is +250 with no at -350.

UFC 327: Prochazka vs. Ulberg Prediction

Prochazka has the title experience, so he’s the choice via KO/TKO/DQ at +140
